Anyone in here into those Japanese gorey/thriller flicks? (i.e. Battle Royale, Ichi the Killer, Suicide Club)?

Of course they're not the worst films ever made, far far from it, but the point of that list was to give people a wide selection of great films from accross the genres. The films I singled out as worst are the films which seem to get bigged up alot, and which someone might be tricked into watching. I mean, on face value one would think Lawrence of Arabia to be one of the best films ever made, but it really isnt IMO, same with Dances with Wolves. There are far worse westerns than it, Denby and Open Range for example, but no-one going out to see the best films around would really be tricked into watching them, unlike Dances with Wolves which people might be.Originally posted by Virgo
all the movies you stated as worst cannot even be considered as so.
Maybe overrated but certainly not worst. You haven't seen many movies throughout your life if you think they're the worst.
Dances with Wolves is a great movie. Probably the only good movie by Kevin Costner. I don't consider it as one of the best western ever, because it's not your traditional western, but nonetheless it was one of the most enjoyable and hearthwarming movie experiences about the differences of cultures I have ever seen.

I agree I did think the detail they went into of the day to day Sioux life was good to watch, but I feel the film shows no genuine curiosity about the larger designs of the Sioux culture. I thought the script was very loose and disconnected, and I thought Costner directed like a man who's been an actor all his life rather than a pure director, making it quite clumsy. It just seems like a mix of genres (Western, War-Drama, Romance) taking just the worst bits from each. However, that's just my opinion, and I'm definately in a minority as the 12 oscar nominations suggestOriginally posted by ::shinji::
I'm a fairly big fan of this movie too, I don't really consider it a western either, if anything I'd call it a war-drama that happened to be set in that particular time period. But there are things I like and dislike about it though, for one I was impressed with how the Sioux culture was portrayed in a positive manner, as it was before European contact, which is actually pretty unheard of in movies like this that usually portray Native Amerindians in a more uncivilized role. I have family members, including my fiancee that are of Native descent so I usually have an extra interest in these things. I did have a problem with a couple things though....for one, despite wanting to break barriers and dispell stereotypes, I found it way too convienient and far-fetched that there just happened to be a white woman there to be Kevin Costner's love interest (still didn't want to cross the interracial barrier), and the fact that Kevin Costner's acting is usually pretty mediocre..
Yeah, it really is an all time classic.Originally posted by $teauA

Titanic won 11 oscars therefore you're entitled to that opinion.
Sorry but I have to disagree with you there, unlike the other worst categories, in this one I actually do believe Donnie Brasko to be the worst of all. It was just so poor, I was expecting so much from such great actors, but there was nothing to it. The storyline was weak and dull (alright, they were sticking to a true story, maybe they shouldnt have been so rigid), the actors were cast in rolls that didnt suit them (they acted really well, but Pacino should not be cast as an old, useless hasbien and Depp should not be cast as someone who is meant to be inconspicuous and blend in), the multiple storylines were really rough around the edges, the whole thing was just a really, really poor film.Originally posted by turnandcough
i cant believe people are dissin donnie brasco!!! thought it was a great movie...the part where he wont take his shoes off in the restaraunt....that was a fantastic scene....it may not be as good as other gangster movies but its still by no means the WORST gangster movie ever....any one who hasnt seen it i suggest you give it a try
