Showing one's colors

I was just browsing through club chants to upload into fifa when I was reminded of something I've known for a few years, but never really understood. So, at the risk of sounding like a stupid American bandwagoner, why is wearing your club's colors to a game typically looked down on and discouraged? Does it have to do with the history of hooliganism in the game?

For me, I don't do it because I'm a superstitious fart. Don't wear the jersey on matchdays, don't drink anything but J2O during the match. When I go to home games, which is rarely, I usually take a scarf or wear something red. You can understand, I'm sure, dressing neutral for games like Chelsea away.

Wearing your team's colors is actually pretty usual in Germany, almost everybody does it from small children to pensioner.

In Spain is not really an issue, more likely is that people wont wear specific items of the colors, like a jersey but no scarf, a tshirt but no jersey, either or, but always the team colors

The hooligans, at least in Britain, would wear casual clothes. That's why they're called casuals.

If they saw someone in a club top they'd leave them alone because they were just a fan and not a hooligan.

Replica shirts are huge on the English scene - both at games and in general. I don't think it's frowned upon to wear your colours at matches anymore - in fact I think it's encouraged, you only have to look at St James' Park every other weekend - it's like a uniform up there!

Here in Brazil it's quite dangerous wearing a club's colours when attending matches between rival sides, but it's ok for everyday use.

Yeap. I go with my team's jersey every match, except for derby matches. Then you risk getting beaten up to death...

I once rode across Rotterdam on my bike with my Ajax scarf around my neck. I got out alive... :)

It's risky wearing Piast Gliwice scarf or shirt in some districts of my town, especially in those where live lots of Górnik fans.

I never heard of such thing... Why wouldn't you wear your teams colours?
I dunno. That's why I asked. Some website had a guy talking about how "it makes you look like a tourist" or something. I thought I'd heard of similar sentiments before.
