Should Tim Howard be Man U's #1?

I like Barthez but he has made some costly mistakes in important high-pressure over the last 2 seasons. If the reports of Howard's performances are accurate (I can't find anywhere that is showing highlights of the US Tour games in the UK - other than MUTV, which I don't have) then he should be #1. Especially as these performances have come in what would be high-pressure games for him, debut on your old home ground against Juve, followed by a match against Barcelona. Okay, they weren't like Real Madrid in CL QFs but a debut like that must be of similar pressure.

Sorry Barthez, but if Howard's as good as he sounds then prepare for bench duty.

of course, a third string goalkeeper for a second rate team.
A second rate team that dethroned you and got farther than you in the CL. Give it up. GIve up your campain of false confidence in Arsenal.

Anyway, Howard should definitely start. I puke on anyone who says Barthez is better. Obviously these people dont see how he kept Man Utd in the game so many times.

Dont get ahead of yourself, he might become one of the best in CONCACAF, (its not that hard) but it'll be a while before he would actually be, or be recognized as, the best in the world.

Rotate Howard and Barthez at the beggining then see who is performing better. You have to remember Howard will need time to settle in and have a good comunication relationship with the back 4, even though he played excelently against Juve. And Barthez may prove us all wrong aswell, remember his save from Hamann in the dieng minutes of our away match against liverpool last season?

I knew someone would bring that up. Look at that and compare it to the flying save Howard made against a freekick vs Barca. For every amazing save barthez makes Howard makes 10. If he can get to it Howard WILL save it. Sometimes barthez is just too lacklustre with those halfhearted dives.

Ok, That is a good point. I have yet to see all of Howards saves from the pre-season matches as I dont have MUTV, and if what you are writing is true(Every 1 Barthez great save = 10 great howard saves) then thats great, but he still needs time to settle in before becoming the no.1.

no way, Barthez should be number 1, Tim Howard wasnt too bad in his 2 matchs in goal against a second rate Barca and Juventus playing with the reserves, but i dont think he is ready to be number one for Manchester united just yet.

Yeah he'll need some time to settle, but not that much time I mean look at Brad Friedel. Remember, it's not like he's from a country that speaks another language and has nice weather and stuff. He's played in the cold before. He's played in the rain. He can get used to it I'm sure. But trust me on this, we have a great young keeper on our hands.:) And ahmed, what are you smoking man? Really bad weed or really good weed, because I cant see someone wanting Barthez to start after those performances by howard I just can't see why.

they are just two freindly match mate.Manchester beat Juve 4-1 that should show yout that Juve wasnt trying hard...:p :)

Nah man. It doesn't matter how hard they were trying. What matters is how hard Howard was trying. He has a superb ability to save and I'm confident he'll do well for us.:)

Tim Howard is a great young talent and I think that if Manchester United continues to play him he will prove himself every oppurtunity he gets. also, i was wondering, is howard on the national team?

Again. That has nothing to do with his ability. Do you really expect him to be in the first team all the time when he played for the Metrostars? He has a good ability and that's all that matters. His place in the team is air. It's abstract. It's on paper.

I think Friedel and Keller would still be chosen over Howard, but that won't last for long since they're both getting old. I think it's likely Howard will be our #1 at World Cup 2006, should we qualify.

Right now he's still our third-choice 'keeper, but let's not forget our first-choice keeper was goalkeeper of the year in the Premiership.

Barthez is number 16, if that is what you are looking for. They're both on my top 5 list for the best keepers in the world (Yes, Utd is my club).
