not really, you don't tackle at the feet. You do that and you risk a major penalty, you more of run into them with your shoulder when they are on the boards. Or, if they are looking down, you can also plow them. If you overdo it though, you can get a minor penalty for roughing. Also, hitting with your elbow is also a minor penalty.

It's a rougher game. You can even start a fight (two players throw off their gloves and start punching each other, it is legal, but both players then get major penalties, and if one player was heckling the other to fight, he can get a minor penalty added on and a game misconduct as well, but if it's a normal fight, they both get sent off for 5 minutes, but no team loses players)

Don't be disillusioned that it's just a fighting game. There about probably 75 fights a team per 82 game season, so it's not exactly something that goes on every 5 minutes.

I also forgot to say how you can get a penalty shot. If a player is cleanly away on a breakaway (when he is ahead of all the players on the ice but the goalie, and there is no one around him to his sides, only behind) and gets taken down from behind, that is a penalty shot, and if a defending player (that isn't a goalie) puts his hand on the puck while the puck is in the goalie's crease (a half circle in front of the goal, i don't know the exact dimensions, but it's big enough for the goalie to stand in, but yes, he can come out of the goal (but he can't cross centre unless he is going to a bench for an extra attacker)

What? Extra attacker? Yes, a team can tell their goalie to skate to the bench in order to get 6 skaters out on the ice. Usually only used when a team is losing and there is less then a minute left in the third period.

The advantages? You get another skater to try to score.
The disadvantages? Your net is left wide open.
