Scoring Goals & Tactics *Help*

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the whole FIFA scene. So assume I have no previous FIFA experience or knowledge. I have FIFA 09 on the PC and I am my fifth season in Manager Mode as Man UTD. I play on World Class with Professional GK.

Anyways, my question is how do you usually score goals? I watched a match or two on youtube of the Championship Gaming Series FIFA players but it didn't really help me at all tactics wise.

I usually try a counter-attack of a pass, pass, through ball to hopefully score but isn't reliable at all...

Could you fine gents give me a few of your tactics to try against the all mighty CPU? (I assume human vs. human strategy is vastly different?) If you don't want to post your "uber" tactic, PM me! Haha...

Thanks for your help! ;)

First of all, pick a tactic. The style of your play. Counter attacks, wing play, possession... ect. If you have good wingers and players with good headers go with wing play and try to run down the wings and cross. If you have fast player (fast forwards) try counter attacking. My personal favorite is after a corner when its really easy to counter. If you have good passers try possession. Keep the ball, pass back and wait for a good run. When 1 v 1 with the GK, try to score by holding Q and tapping D ever so slightly and pointing the shot to a corner of the goal. Your player will roll the ball under the keeper with a precision strike into the bottom corner (if you have a good finisher). These are few of the tactics that you can use. It all comes down to developing a good tactic and getting a good feel of the game and your players. Try to play normal games before manager to get familiar with your players.
Hope this helps!

I try to do wing play sometimes, and when I cross it either goes at the goal (as if I took a shot) or it goes too far back out of the box. Seems to be no middle ground.

What defensive tactic do you use? (And do you use man marking?) Man marking seems to just open up holes in my defense. (I have my two middle CB's man mark the other teams two strikers)

Hi shibby first of all, since you r new to the game u need to change your game setting to professional or semi pro instead of world class.
In time with a lot of practice and matches played you can upgrade to world class.

Secondly its best that u played alot of friendies against the cpu,so u can get your confidence up,because in manager mode if your not doing well u well get fired.

I started playing thr fifa series with fifa 06,back in 2005 and i got the crap kicked out of me,because i wanted to start playing in pro and world calss mode.

So what i did i switched to semi pro mode ,so i became comfortable with the game plays, tactics and shot selections

However i always use the logitech game pad controllers i have three,i dont use the keyboard.
What do u use?

ShibbyDPHS crossing takes practice. Also, you should cross with players with good crossing stats. If you are facing who you want to cross to then do about 50% of the bar. If your running down the wing do 75% of the bar when your right past the penalty box. Just practice a lot.

As for defensive tactics, I don't use man marking because if I want to move up on an on-coming midfielder with my center back then a forward is left open.
If you want to attack a lot then I would suggest pressing, but you have to not let up for a second. Keep constant pressure and watch out for the long pass.
Offside trap doesn't work that well but you can try to combine it with the attacking tactic (the orange up arrow) so that you can keep the STs offside from the long pass.
Turn down the difficulty and just practice.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

Logitech game pad controller

I can win games on World Class Field / Professional GK, it just is a pain in the butt because the CPU guesses your movements perfectly and they have a pass accuracy of like ~90%

Alrighty!

I also use a 4-1-2-1-2 formation which works pretty well, unless there is a custom one vastly better?

Holy balls ... Ame and Semi Pro are a joke, Professional is challenging, World Class is challenging but not impossible, Legendary is just stupid...

Honestly I think you'd be lucky to get one shot on goal...

I just don't see how people say "09 is soooo easy"

what the heck... is there some uber tactic I don't know?

Go to the wing and cross it ... sure but the defenders on tougher difficulties will always win the ball and clear it ...

I assume if you can "roll" the computer on legendary you must absolutely rape human players. (I.E. the computer plays perfect defense, knows which way you'll turn after a chest bounce, etc.)

Can someone show some game footage of them playing? And don't post ZOMG goals on uber noobie goalies...

Is it tougher because I play against all premier teams?

*so lost*

You play with Man Unt right?
Use Ronaldo's skills to score, cut in from the wings and trick out defenders. (too bad there isn't diving lol). I use a keyboard so it might be different. I find it MUCH easier with keyboard although game pad has many advantages too. Take long shots with Rooney, use Berba as a target man for headers and through balls... umm... use Evra and Neville on the wings to overlap... idk. I'm fresh out of ideas!

No premier teams are NOT tougher. 4 1/2 - 5 star teams are tough, doesn't matter from what league.

To get your shooting better, play against weak keepers or low keeper difficulty or the opposite. Weak comp but awesome keeper. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

(I sucked ass when I started but my love for soccer/football urged me on!)

Something else that drives me banana sandwich is when my defenders either don't go for the ball (literally move away from attackers entering the box) or bump into each other which usually leads to a goal for the other team (not goalie on defender but defender on defender).

Is there any fixes for that or just play on World Class / Legendary?

Also I find it extremely lame that IF the opposing team gets a free kick, they'll have a 90% chance of making it. How do I get my line of guys in front of the kick to jump? They just stand there like a bunch of muppets...

I have no clue about the bumping defenders. I have never like Vidic... lol
ANYWAYS
About the free kick thing, if the comp wants/needs to score, it will. No matter from where, depending on the difficulty, there is a set % that he will score no matter what. Jumping is just pressing a or d when he shoots but the only way for him not to score from a free kick is to not give him a free kick.

That's very bad logic, never mark a mid player with your defender. If there is a dangerous forward around, assign a defensive midfielder to mark him. Also, have wing backs assigned to opponents wingers if they play with a LWM and RWM on the field.

Turn on the radar if you don't have it. You can use it to intercept passes (it takes some practice anyway). In time you will probably figure out the opponents passing pattern altogether and the game will suddenly become easy.

During free kicks try to move the wall to cover the empty side of the goal. Unless the angle is perfect for the enemy striker (and it is quite often), the shot will bounce off the wall or he will miss, etc. There are some free kicks you just can't defend against though... Also, I don't think you can make the players in the wall jump, but you can have one of them run forward and attempt to block the shot by pressing the pass button (or shoot button? can't remember correctly atm).

All that stuff about defenders running AWAY from the striker and bumping into each other is just your own doing. If the game switches to a different player when you are holding a directional arrow (on the keyboard or pad), the player will instanly start moving in that direction. Many times this given direction is the exact opposite of the desired one. I know this because it happened to me quite often in FIFA 08. I learned to switch players manually and pay more attention during defense. Now it happens a lot less.

As for attacking.... formations are not that important. It's subjective I think. Some people like 4-4-2, some prefer 4-2-3-1, etc. Having wingers is always an advantage for me. Also 4-3-3 is good, very offensive.

Wing Play tactic combined with Counter-Attack used to be very good in FIFA 08, because it increased spontaneous player movements a lot. In FIFA 09, players move around a lot by default, but I still like WP and CA :D

For crossing, don't forget that pressing a direction / multiple directions adds a spin to the ball. Very useful if you don't want the GK to catch it. This also applies for corners, free kicks (even free kicks from your own half can be used to score). Also, when crossing from the wings, tap the button twice for a low cross. It's much more effective if you learn to aim it correctly (with the directional keys again).

1 on 1 vs the GK, either take a low shot or lob the ball over his head.

Funny thing is, you can also score with a precise cross as well. Reminds me of Poborsky's goal against portugal :D

Oh, and don't lower the difficulty below Professional for both the GK and the players. I think starting off on World Class for FIFA 09 is more than acceptable. You might lose a few matches, but you'll adapt eventually.

The easiest way to score is from either defending a corner or a cross use a bulky defender to run the ball out of defence. Hopefully a cpu player will be running behind thereby the other ai cpu defenders in front of you will back off(because a man is already on you).

Dont sprint and run into gaps ( if the gaps start to close knock the ball forward and sprint through the defence).

So basically just run straight through the middle and shoot. This tactic wont work if there is not a cpu player running right behind you.

I can do this on legendary and i am fed up about how far you can run with the ball in this game. Just muck around and see how far you can run with the ball.

AWESOME info! I'll put this to use right away.

Ok so I played my friend about 9 times (5 last night and 4 today so far) and I've won every time. He played FIFA 08 on this 360 pretty religiously. Obviously he's not uber great but he beats people online.

I think I'm getting a little better and I can win probably 70% of the time on World Class / World Class now.

(My latest victory against him was LA Galaxy versus Italy National. I beat him 6-1 lol ... Beckham with 3 free kick goals) After 3-1 he just got mad and didn't really try haha...

Anyways thanks for your help guys!

My next major question is what patches / fixes I need? But I assume it will take a little while to get those out.

(new nets, HQ kits, better lighting, gameplay fixes?, new animations from PES?)

Ur right. For free kicks try pressing w or d. W makes a player rush out of the wall and d jump.
Another thing that is annoying is if ur keeper has the ball in his hand n u make him drop the ball and run, then make a pass he'll continue his foward running.

Thats one of the flaws in this game, your players without the ball are scripted to move out the way of the oncoming attackers, the attacker does not have to change his path to beat you unless you tackle.

I dont agree, there is a lot of scripting of defenders you cannot control. When you switch, they do take a step in the wrong direction and there is nothing you can do apart from try to switch as early as you can to recover.
Scripting example- you are manually marking a forward who is trying to make runs into space whilst you have a midfeilder or defender trying to press the oncoming midfeilder. The midfeilder plays a through ball but you believed you have covered the forward well enough, the scripting takes control of your defender the instant the ball is played and he steps forward then turns back to now to chase the attacker who is through. No matter how much you practice you will not have complete control over that defender for the duration of the incident. You have to try to stop the through ball.
