Scandal! Portuguese police investigating match-rigging and corruption

HUGE news! The Portuguese police is investigating corruption and match-rigging in the Portuguese leagues. The president of Liga, Valentim Loureiro, of the referees and other 16 people were held by the police.

But it seems this only regards the lower, non-professional divisions, but this hasn't been confirmed. Few details are known at this moment.

You really dont mean that, your still upset you lost to that 3rd division side that might be involved, Gondmar.

You better beleive if this is true, that SLB might be in 2nd division from all the corruption they have been involved in, throw them in 3rd division and let them compete with Farense. (H) Both have more then they know in common, cant make payroll payments, both have new stadiums that are a desert with like 2,000 fans a game. Both had pathetic presidents. So much in common.

SLB had to have those possible REF benificial calls, damm Mariana20 had so many PK's outside the box last season, how is it possible.

Also this will be good for Benfica they actually will then have a chance to win something with dream team, like a 3rd division title.

Get indeed the big fish!!!LFV ;) ask Azevedo what went on? also Valentim Loureiro how many times was BFC benifited, your son says he is always the victum bullsh;t.

Did we not expect this, it's portuguese football all knew sh;t like this was happening. Even in suspensions it's so corrupt.

I remember teh Capucho suspension on Wilson from Belenenses how Capucho got a hard punishment, only to see a SLB player do worse and nothing happen. Then the timming on suspensions like the Costa-Costinha on SLB came when important games were about to happen took the damm board like 6 months to hand it out, so bullsh;t it's good that they are investigating and maybe going to slap a few behind bars when it's all done. As FCP has been getting robbed in past years in this kind of bullsh;t dident matter as we are still the best and keep on winning. But small teams like Academica have also lost points because of questionable calls, in 2nd divison it's much worse. So many teams have complaints about this kind of stuff and it does indeed happen as we see now.

Not even gonna coment on this but you made my day.

Im almost crying with your ignorance, stupidity and inability to see that Porto was always the most heavily linked club with these kind of scandals. Not to mention that Mourinho almost cried last year because he was robbed once or twice but when Deco dives 2 derbies in a row and get players sent off wrongfully, it's all ok.

Remember when your president bought a trip to Brazil to some ref. Great going.

And sure Benfica will play in the 2nd league... ROFL

 but you did comment...LOL (H)

And not 2nd but 3rd as 2nd Salgueiros still might be there and you wont beat them to be champs. Santa Clara aka SLBjr. will let you get the 6 points.

But 3rd division why not, dont you wanna be Champions, win a title it's the best offer, great deal accept it.

:mrpimp: Man you try and help out a non tax paying team and their fans get hostile, it's just a suggestion,LOL.

Brazil is that where Vale Azevedo's boat is? Lucky Me :rockman:

You cnat win on the pitch or off it, your SLB!!!

it's incredible how this stupid guy ruins threads every day. The news talk about Benfica?? The news talk about Gondomar not Benfica.

The refs helped any result this season? yes 1 game against Rio Ave. And Porto? yes Guimaraes, Leiria (SuperCup); Moreirense (twice), etc etc... so please shut your mouth...
which club paid a trip to Brazil to a ref?

PS: i'm getting really tired of see this guy do whetever he wants on this forum...

It's confirmed that Gondomar is the club involved. The people arrested are the mayor of Gondomar, chairman and three refs of the second category.

Yes, it has been confirmed that this is related to lower divisions and Gondomar, specifically. Also, Pinto de Sousa, the president of the FPF Refeereing Counsel is accused of "passive corruption".

But it also seems this is only one case amongst many others, that are also being investigated. It's a mega-operation. The police has searched for evidences and documents in more than 60 (!!!) places today, including the Portuguese Federation (FPF), Liga, local federations, autarchies, referee's (including Superliga ones) and chairmans houses, SC Braga, Naval, etc.

This seems like something really big and it's only the beggining. Let's see if they're finally going to dig deep or just end up filing the process, like in the past (like bmpv666 also mentioned).

Thank you very much, Punkt! :) I also enjoy coming back and seeing again posts from people like you, who I also regard highly.

I keep going and coming, coming and going from the forum... Lol, guess I just can't help it! Anyway, I hope this is a "staying" phase and that it lasts longer than the others... :p

I just hope the investigations go all the way up to the Superliga. The lower league investigation is just the tip of the iceberg. I would also like to see the top clubs investigated regardless of their national status. I remember Milan was relegated and Paolo Rossi was banned for 2 years because of ilicit behaviour and corruption. Same thing with Marseille.
Superliga needs credibility and specially needs to get rid of this cumplicity btw politics and football.

Ps Pedro Sanhudo and Luis Reforço are amongst the ppl who are currently held in Pj´s "calabouços". I remember that they were top flight referee´s some years ago and they got demoted to the lower leagues because of poor performances. I hope they investigate those years too, once corrupt always corrupt.

Finally.

When I heard Loureiro was in jail I wondered at first what was the causet: his illegal use of the term 'Major', his business frauds, his arrogant behavior towards the police bcs of a traffic ticket, the diamonds he stole when he ran out of Africa after the 25th April 74', the rumours about his pedophile connections, his illegal gifts to the mob in general prior to the municipal elections or something related to football corruption. Seems they caught him for the last reason. Good.

It seems like one big-ass operation, with over 60 agents involved, so lets just hope they clean all the dirty seeds, no matter who's involved.
Still, I am expecting that the majority of the accused will come from second line clubs. The corruption and illegal schemes are far more frequent on the non-pro leagues. Arranging results is frequent, bribing refs is easy and promoting your club to a higher division is all about paying money to the right people.

If anything, may football win just this once.

I share your views... Also, the promiscuity between politics and football generates one of the biggest corruption sources and "lobbies" in our country.

But, unfortunately, although I don't like playing the pessimist, I don't believe this will go all the way. There are many big interests involved, because I'm sure there are also other big names related to this...

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong and that definitely we have a healthy football (well, in fact, more important than this would be the all society and areas like politics) in our country. It's also more than time for new people to come. For too long the same people have ruled our football and acted in whatever way they wanted to... "New blood", new mentalities, honest and progressive people are needed!

Like you said: "If anything, may football win just this once."
