Finally after 12 years in Italy, Rui Costa returned to Benfica. he have signed a 1 year contract without a estabilished wage. "The President could put the wage he wants on the contract. my only purpose was return to my heart club"

   CLASS!

I smell the sh*t hitting the fan when things start to go bad because of useless players like Robert getting astronomic wages and doing nothing to justify it.

Either Rui Costa is still a top class player and will be extremely useful. It's really great seeing him wearing the shirt again. He looked very very happy.

He shouldve made this move, or left Milan the day Kaka arrived and took his place.

One of my favourite players over the years, made the Serie A great for 10 years. Wish him the best in Portugal, hope him and Miccoli can have a good partnership

I don't like it how guys are praising him for returning to his "heart" club, if it was his heart club he would have never left for so long, or left period. It's all b/s media that just came out making the guy look good, his luck. Yeah he's a great player but he hasn't been part of much of the first team for Milan, maybe sometimes coming off the bench but not doing anything major

see there we go again. people like you who have no idea what was going on in his life behind closed doors, criticizing him for making decisions for his own life and career.

people are applauding him for something he's doing now. he doesn't have to. if he had stayed at milan, he'd be criticized for collecting paychecks but "not doing anything major." how can he win? instead, he follows his heart and just simply wants to be at his "heart club."

anyways, congratulations to rui costa and benfica. in a time when athletes are constantly being shown in a negative light, this is something to smile at. that is a class act.

It's not media bullsh*t, i'll explain why in 2 or 3 situations that happened with him...

1º - One year before he leaves Benfica (if i'm not mistaken), him, Paulo Sousa and Pacheco, all Benfica players had a contract offer from Sporting... All of them, including Rui, would be payed with a much bigger salary. Paulo Sousa, and Pacheco, were at Sporting next year, Rui Costa, with such a young age, didn't wanted to go to win much more money, because like he said "In Portugal, i will only play for Benfica". Obviously it's very nice to say that the true players that love the club are those who stay in the clubs all their entire career... However, correct me if i'm wrong, those kind of players only appear in big clubs that can afford to pay them such a big salary, so they don't need to move one to richer leagues, so they can build their lifes, ie: Maldini (Milan), Del Piero (Juve) etc... Rui obviously couldn't stay at Benfica forever, with such a great quality, he needed to move on, his life was first, also, his transfer was (or should be) a great help to Benfica, 4M € in 93/94 if i'm not wrong...

2º - Friendly, Benfica - Fiorentina
Benfica was winning 1-0, Rui Costa was the captain, demanded by Batistuta :p... He scores, after he scored, not only he didn't celebrate the goal, but he cried... I could only post this and it would be enough to prove his love for the club.

3º - Always said he wanted to come to Benfica, didn't come before because Fiorentina and Milan never let him leave, at least for the price Benfica was able to pay...

4º - Played in the youths since his 10 years old...

etc, etc...

Professionalism at it's very best, fighter against modern football (one of the few that still survived), will always get my respect for that.

VIVID LEGEND!

PS: Also, a brilliiiiiiiiiiant player, just class. Basically, a Sir :p

Great to have him back in our league! (Y)

Just a couple notes:

1. I think Benfica will struggle next year. If that happens, Rui Costa surely deserved a better ending to his career.

2. Anyone criticizing a player for moving abroad and getting 500% more every week has to be less than 18 years old. Really, grow up to the real world. You'll see it once your daddy stops paying your bills.
Rui is now a wealthy man, doesn't need a high wage to live a great life so he can come back to his club and just enjoy himself. (Y)

Rui Costa

One of the best players i've ever seen... for me, when at his prime, he was at Top 3 of the most talented and complete midfielders...

Even though he's no longer at his best, I'm hoping that I see some of the old magic left in him in the coming season. By coming back home to Benfica, he has shown to us all that he is a sportsman who is driven by competition, and not the almighty euro.

WELCOME BACK RUI!
