Will he be playing on PC or a console?

There are some names, but as Johnny_Big pointed out, there are many variations... If on PC, then there are some stuff to consider too, like PC specs...

For PC, if he likes Diablo-like games, Diablo 2 + Expansion shouldn't cost much, though it's a bit dated. Even if you consider getting a new mouse after all the clickety-clicking...

On another sub-genre, Vampire: Bloodlines is a great game, and as close to a RPG as possible, since it's based on Vampire the Masquerade, if a bit on the heavy side (both in computer requirements and content - how old is your bro? I wouldn't want a 10 years old seeing a vampire eating human flesh...)

if you're going for PC RPGs like Diablo, try the Baldurs Gate series.

Bit old now but still top of the tree for me.

Fallout 1 and 2 are to be considered too, as Classic turn based RPGs. Rated 18+ in most countries, but I'd be happy to let my 12 year old son/daughter play it (if I had any). It is very, very, violent. And gorey. And has sexual references/hookers and the like. But nothing a 12 year old won't fathom. Still my favourite games of all time, storywise. They're almost as old as Baldur's Gate, and have very outdated graphics.

Diablo I and II are classics. Never tried Baldur's Gate, but from what I heard...one of the most underrated and underplayed games of our generation.

Consoles? Grab a Sega Saturn and Shining Force 3.

Shining Force 3 >>>>>>>>> You.

Baldur's Gate is a dream if you've got a decent PC. Honestly, made in 1998 but it still looks amazing (if you dont mind the isometric view).

More kiddy PS2 game; Dark Chronicle. Extremley long and engaging, good stuff.

Personally, I'd go with Dragon Quest VIII.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is another superb title, but that one isn't turn-based.

FFX is turn based, it isnt gorey or bloody, it has a 60hr storyline and over 40 weapons that are all customisble.

Tell him to open his eyes to the world (H)

Your little brother? then i'd go with something like Fable: The Lost Chapters. Challenging for the tyke but not too confronting in terms of gore and horror themes. :jap:

Why dont you try Shining Force II. It's my favourite RPG, it's for Mega Drive, and nowadays you can play it in your cell phone. How about that?

Shining Force is a quality series; very, very underrated. I'm surprised a few of you know about it, actually.

I'm surprised no one ever mentions Chrono Trigger but me, though. It's the messiah of console RPGs.
