Does anyone know any movies about the Roman empire, or that timeperiod? i've already watched a few like julius ceasar and augustus (both made for tv) I've watched gladiator a while back.

Also are the really old movies (sparticus) accurate? or just retarded...

Its not Roman, but i'd suggest Troy. Same idea basically.

I thought this movie was great, for some reason the critics didnt like it too much. steer clear of alexander, well except for Rosario Dawson's scene.

Ben-Hur should be first on the list, and the Spartacus.

I also really liked Troy. and I didnt hate Alexander, but all the gay stuff, though real and necessary, was actually a turn off for me :(

I thought Troy was **** Probably cuz I had seen the Oddyseus mini-seri, Tory became sort of a replay with better looking actors to me

Troy is about greeks though.
I liked Titus (with anthony hopkins), thats a roman empire movie

Don't watch Troy if you are interested in getting anything from it, it's a cool film to watch but very innaccurate to the writing of Homer and not particularly historically accurate either.

Spartacus and Ben-Hur are two amazing Roman epics, with both incredible storyline and a very useful insight into the Ancient Roman world. Gladiator isn't in the same league but is still a decent film with much historical accuracy.

There was an excellent program on the BBC called 'Caesar', staring Christopher Walken as Cato and Richard Harris as Sulla, which was one of the best films about JC I have ever seen, really good.

Then there is I, Claudius and Claudius the God, which are about as accurate to actual history as you're going to get, much of it taken directly from the writing of Tacitus, but aren't particually good to watch. Also, Monty Python's Life of Brian has a surprising amount of genuine historical relevance.

Believe me the real Spartacus film is anything but corny, I rewatched it a few days ago and it was just as incredible as always, at at 3hrs+ you get your moneysworth, if you're interested in Roman films, it should be your first stop. The cast is incredible too, Charles Laughton is one of my very favourite actors, Peter Ustinov is an incredible character actor, Lawrence Olivier needs no bigging up and neither does Tony Curtis, and Kirk Douglas puts in his finest ever performance. I absolutely promise you'll love it.

Quo Vadis, it's really old though you might have to go look in a library to find it. I suggest reading the book first though, great read (Y).

If you're interested in Roman novels, check out 'The Last Legion' by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, a really good book and the only decent novel set in Roman times I have ever read.
