Roma - Voller new Coach ...

Savo

Grobar
Rudi Völler has been named coach of AS Roma on a one-year contract, replacing Cesare Prandelli who resigned last week for family reasons.

Roma favourite
The former Germany coach scored 45 goals in five seasons with Roma from 1987-92 and admitted that returning to the Serie A club was an offer he could not refuse. "Italy and Rome have always been in my heart," Völler said. "I could not say 'no' to Roma because I love this club. Now I only hope I will be able to give them my best."

Germany disappointment
Völler, 44, takes the job after relinquishing the Germany post following his side's early exit at UEFA EURO 2004™. He had been in charge of the national team since 2000 and led his country to the 2002 FIFA World Cup final against all expectations.

High achiever
The highlight of Völler's playing days came at Roma's Stadio Olimpico in 1990 when he helped West Germany lift the FIFA World Cup. He was part of Roma's Coppa Italia-winning side a year later but the pinnacle of his club career came with Olympique de Marseille in 1993 when he won the UEFA Champions League.

Champions League
Völler will return to Champions League action when Roma start their campaign against FC Dynamo Kyiv on 15 September. Völler's first match in charge will be against ACF Fiorentina three days earlier.

Voller pens Roma contract Tuesday 31 August, 2004
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AS Roma have officially announced that their new Coach is former player Rudi Voller.

The German was expected to put pen to paper after Cesare Prandelli confirmed his resignation due to personal issues was irrevocable.

The club has now signed Voller on a one-year deal worth just under £2m a season plus achievement-related bonuses. His assistant manager at the Stadio Olimpico will be Ezio Sella, who took charge of the squad during Sunday’s 5-3 friendly win over Iran.

Voller has already taken charge of his first training session with the Giallorossi at the Trigoria ground after flying in from Germany.

“Roma and Italy are forever in my heart,” commented the man who became a fan favourite between 1987 and ’92. “This was a decision dictated by my emotions rather than my head, because being in charge of Roma is a unique experience for me. I just hope I can do my best.”

Voller stepped into the breach following Prandelli’s resignation due to the serious illness of his wife.

“Prandelli has been struck by this terrible situation and I’ll try to replace him in the most professional way possible,” added the new tactician.

“I could have stayed at Bayer Leverkusen and been a director with a relaxing job, but I chose to come back here because I would take that risk for Roma. We have a special rapport and I consider this to be a very strong team.”

Like I said in the Roma thread, good luck to him.

The game against "his" team, Leverkusen, will be interesting.

you say that as if it was his wife's choice to have a life threatening illness.
did mrs prandelli say to mr prandelli, "If you go to coach roma at the end of the 2003-2004 season, i will be so mad that i will decide to get a serious disease?"
i think not. they had no idea that this bad fortune would happen to prandelli.

Good move for Voller, but hes got a tough job on his hands.

Possibly, but considering the Milan juggernaut and Juve's flurry of signings, I don't think expectations for Roma are astronomical this year.
