[RESULTS] USA vs. Mexico

The handball was pretty bad, but honestly, do you really think the Mexican would have scored that?

Besides, the Mexicans got away with a wide variety of unsportsanlike conduct (namely punching and kicking). But towards the end, the Mexican team was penalized because not even this referee could be so blind - just in the second half, all the Mexican players I hate got carded (Blanco, Luis Hernandez and Carmona) - and you know it is a bad thing when the captain gets redcarded. Terrible match by the Mexicans - I can't say I enjoyed any minute of their disgraceful behavior.

I was very happy with the match - I knew the US would defeat Mexico. I just didn't expect McBride to score again =) Great way to take a shot!

GREAT JOB, USA

If the US deserves merit, it's that in very few scoring opportunities they capitalized 2.

that's how the game is played, you have to take advantage of your opportunities when they come. nothing wrong with that.

mexico dominated possession and failed to score. you don't think friedel and the united states defense deserve any merit? it takes an extremely poor attack to fail to score on a useless defense/keeper, and mexico certainly do not have a poor attack.

But the pivotal moment of this game was in the beginning of the second half. The US 1 Mex 0. Mexico has a corner, takes the corner, and an American defensemen incurs in a BLATANT hand ball by punching it away from a Mexican strikers head, avoiding his shot.

true, it was a terrible non-call. it should have been a penalty. of course, friedel has already saved every penalty he's faced in this world cup, why wouldn't he do it again?

hopefully mexican fans aren't going to point only at o'brien's handball as the sole reason for the loss. the fact remains that mexico did not score through ninety minutes. they did not take advantage of the opportunities they had, while the united states did.

it's a shame that it works that way sometimes, but hey, that's football.

He punched it out, that is blatant. And of course that makes a difference he would have been thrown out of the match and they could have tied.

All I'm saying is FIFA has to make changes. The 1 central ref +2 linesman has proven to be ineffective in keeping up with the plays and overall accuracy. I don't know maybe 2 linesmen per side for a total of 4 would help.

The US deserved the win, it's as easy as them scoring those 2 goals. But I'm sick of the what ifs a lot of refs make me go through as a fan. They shouldn't be the ones deciding the games.

Going by that logic, shouldn't you also take into consideration that at least three Mexican players should have also been taken out of the game for foul play (e.g. Blanco poking the US player on the ground with his knee).

The referee didn't decide anything - the US decided that game.

personally i dont think that there is anything wrong with teh system, teh problem here exists with teh quality fo refereeing, look at the game france senegal, that ref was great, the same with teh bald italian guy, hes also an outstanding ref. The problem is there just arent enough good refs out there, or whoever chose the refs for this WC had to be mentally challeneged, becasue both 4 and 8 years ago the level of reffereeing wasnt as baad as it is in 2002.

and again, the mexicans should be ashamed of the disgraceful football that their representation played today.

oh... and what was with all the yellows for the U.S. players, I could have seen maybe one or two, but the rest were absurd, did the ref want to make it evenly colourful? dunno!

Mexico were crap and deserved to lose. They were chasing shadows as soon as Mcbride scored. Those dirty , fouling twats knew they were beaten and played like filth for the last half hour. This is one of the gretest moments in US sporting history. But will the dull American mainstream take notice? Them and their crapy baseball, golf and basketball. They can kiss my ***. In any other country they would be out in the streets, but here I am the only person up in my neighbourhood while the zombies around me sleep unaware. They will all wake up tomorrow, not even realising the scope of what happened. It makes me ill, believe me. Thankfully there are die hard fans like the ones here who make it seem worthwhile and are not ignorant sheep, like most Yanks. I'm not even an American, yet I'm right behind the boys. I hope they go all the way and shove it down the throats of pathetic losers like the hosts on Sportscenter etc.

Voltaire> The fouls occured in the last 15 minutes of the game. I agree that it is disgraceful and unsportsman like.
And you'd agree if for a minute you could set aside your personal preferences, or if it happened to your team constantly. Yes there are good refs, but the system can without a doubt be improved.
This game isn't the only example, as a fan I really have been frustrated in SOOOOO many games. It could only do this sport good to make some changes.

I'd rather start another thread, this is going off topic now. ;)

I for one know about bad calls - Germany had to play their last match without their midfield stars because the Spanish referee gave out 2 red cards and 16 yellows. Only about 2 of those cards were warranted.

Yes, there are bad referees and good referees. But there isn't much room to complain in this match - the referee didn't call many fouls on the Mexicans. And no, the Mexicans were fouling for at least 45 minutes (I missed the first half) - but once again, the referee didn't call them. Here's one instance - one of the US players was going for the ball, and the Mexican threw a punch - and it was the US player who got the yellow card.

If anything, the US got a majority of the bad calls in this match.

I agree the referee has decided some of the matches, but he did not decide USA - Mexico. There were OTHER games perhaps like Brazil - Turkey where the referee played a crucial role. But definitely not in this match.

WOWOWOWOWOW ! :D

it was GREAT performance by USA AGAIN !.......their only dissapointing one came against Korea ......

Todays performance has to be the best of the tournament....could have been 3-1 to USA.....had Mexico got that penalty and had Donovan scored right at the death...but WOW !

Freidel is CLASS...those saves after Pope gave away the ball early in the game were Awesome ! and so was the one off Blancos powerful strike :)

Stars and Stripes FOREVER ! I really hope USA can get past the Germans ......and at this rate , anything is possible.....- 2 counter attacking teams .....2 stern defenses and 2 great shotstoppers

Woohoo ! doesn't get any better !

Bruce Arena is GREAT .....doesn't get over excited , keeps his calm ---Coach-Extradonaire

This game wasn't nearly as boring as Germany/Paraguay. In that one I fell asleep like three times.

This game was good though. US deservedly won it.

I was surprised by some of the very beautiful girls in the crowd. Both on the Mexican and the US side. I actually kissed the TV screen a few times.
But my girlfriend caught me and kicked me in the nuts.

Anyway! Great game deservedly won by the US team. :D

And it was really nice to see Mexican and American fans congratulating each other at the end of the game. Now those are fans, they didn't try to pull the violence BS you see at other games.

I didn't really think Mexico played such a bad game. Actually if it weren't for the fouls in the second half, Mexico were very unlucky to go away with a loss.
And guys whoever says that the penalty wouldn't have meant anything is really wrong. However good Friedel is, it doesn't mean he will stop every penalty that goes his way.
But anyways congrats to US!

Well, Joe, whoever wrote that has issues, that's for sure. But if you lived in a state where it's below freezing 8 months out of the year, and the other 4 months it's infested with mosquitoes the size of small airplanes, you'd have issues, too.

Anyhow, what a great battle! 10 yellow cards, one red card, O'Brien's "Hand of God II," we may claim bragging rights for the next 4 years, but there will be lots to argue about.

IMO, the difference was this: Jeff Agoos was nowhere to be found, and the Americans exploited the Mexican outside defensive backs.

Bruce Arena's "bunker" strategy still makes me nervous, however.

I did not write it, but I agree with the Sportscenter thing. Who cares about Tiger Woods man. I've heard enough about him, it's time for the good old US soccer team.

I also dislike the "bunker" strategy, and it's the reason why we tied Korea. I thought it was going to happen last night, too. But we're a counter-attack team and that's what we did...
