Red Bull NY

Yeah, the Red Bull Salzburg jerseys are awful. They look like training jerseys. Hopefully we get something different for the MetroStars.

Still, $100 million though.

From an Ives Galarcep article:

There once was a soccer team that joined its country's top soccer league just before the turn of the century, figuring it was healthy enough to flourish. Things didn't quite work out that way. Financial struggles nearly led to bankruptcy, but instead led to a sale. The new owners decided that its new club needed a new name and new colors. These might seem like outrageous developments to some, but were they really?

Are we talking about the New York Red Bulls, the club formerly known as the MetroStars? No, in this instance the club was a little English outfit called Newton Heath. Founded in 1878, Newton Heath almost fell into bankruptcy in 1902 before John Davies, the owner of a local brewery, bought the team and saved it from financial ruin. He changed the team's colors from green and gold to red and white and changed the team's name from Newton Heath to Manchester United. The rest is history.

Starting XI
- "John Davies bought the team and saved it from finacial ruins."

- Red Bull bought the team to further promote their cool-aid brand and expand their marketing and commercial potential.

Seems like two different things to me. Then again, I'm no expert.

The colours of Austria.

Didn't know anything about this before going to socceropinion. Red Bull have two teams already in Formula 1 and now, two more teams in football. Expect Red Bull teams for Rugby, NFL, NHL etc.

Not just F1, they have NASCAR and off-road racing teams aswell.

Ok, it's an unfortunate name but still I'd rather more teams be bought out by companies like Red Bull then see MLS teams fold or be forced to relocate because of a lack of money. Let's stop pretending that the MetroStars actually had any real tradition/history, the league is 10 years old. If this type of business insures the growth and continuation of soccer in North America, then so be it.

Salzburg did? Had a history that is
Let's see...

Red Bull Salzburg was founded on September 13, 1933, as SV Austria Salzburg. In 1978 the name was changed to SV Casino Salzburg and in 1997 to SV Wüstenrot Salzburg. Red Bull bought the club on April 6, 2005. Famous players who played for the club include Oliver Bierhoff, Thomas Häßler, and Toni Polster.

SV Austria Salzburg is a three times national champion (1994, 1995 and 1997) and participated several times in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup. In 1994 the club reached the final of the UEFA Cup, they faced Internazionale and unluckily lost a very thrilling game.

After the takeover Red Bull changed the club's name, management and staff, declaring "this is a new club with no history".
----------------------------------------------------------------

Just disgusting...Granted, they had changed their name twice in the last 30 years, including the same year in which they won a title, but to say they have no history is beyond belief.

Even changed the colours too, what Red Bull did to Salzburg smacks of the situation over here with MK Dons, new club with no history etc. :nape:

The logo SHOULD be a RED BULL. Than it would make sense and I like it more than Metrostars. Especially when the team hasnt won crap and doesnt even have stars. Red Bull will do better trust...

PSV stands for Philips Sport Vereniging or Phillips Sports Union. The electronics company.

The difference is that these teams were founded by corporations, rather than being bought and changed. Still, I think if a corporation founded a team in MLS, people would say the league was a joke/mickey mouse etc.

Well in Germany it's very common for factories to have their own teams, called "Betriebssportgemeinschaft". When Bayer Leverkusen was founded the Bayer corporation was just one single factory.
