Just wanted to touch on an interesting point following Kibe Kru's post about the different names for the turkey (bird) in the now infamous French and Swiss attitude thread.
Its original name in the Aztec language is 'xuehxolotl', but the Spanish called it 'gallina de las Indias' (hen of the Indies), now its called pavo. The Arabs call it 'Deek Roumi' which means the Roman hen. Go figure.
Btw, Kibe Kru did not mention this but in Brasil the word 'peru' is also used for 'penis'.
Funnily enough, in Turkish the same bird is called 'hindi'. The French call it 'dinde' also originating from hindi. In Dutch and Danish the name is Kalikut or Calicut (from the Indian city of Calcutta). The strange thing is, turkey comes from the Americas and not from India, it was only introduced to India by the Portuguese. But people back then just confused the West Indies (New World) with the East Indies (India).Kibe Kru said:Random trivia: in Brazil the same bird's name is "peru", which obviously is another country.
