Quick WC 2002 Review

Hey guys...just a quick review of WC 2002...

At the risk of sounding naive...I like it, I really, really do. Everyone always talks about game play...well in this version..the game play has been tweaked to the point where France (I was playing Senegal) spent about two minutes of clock time just ragging the ball while I stayed back. It also allows you more space and more time to build in your half and through midfield. Long runs are usually tolerated for about 30 yards before someone throws you an apparently legal forearm shiver. Pretty cool really...although I've played games of Madden 2002 where I wasn't hit that hard.

I think the runs are much more realistic and better timed.
I did slow the game down to the "slow" setting...which is where I usually play the game, and I don't feel it lacked for the proper speed.

The tackling is much more realistic...with the pllayers being tackled actually trying to push through the challenge. Looks like a player's strength will really come in to play in this game. In three games, I was fouled just once...leading to a free kick...more on that later.

As for ball physics...well...it's EA...but I must say, not all my shots were on target...and not all off target. It also seems that the infamous curling lobs to the corner from the computer team are gone. The ball will curl somewhat when your player shoots if you get a real good piece of it. There is a problem on free kicks, at least for those of us who use key boards. The ball curl function must be pressed and held while shooting. It's hard holding the "c" key or the "x" key while trying to time your "s" key. This may change when the game comes out.

There are several other little changes that I noticed where apparently EA has been listening to us...or someone...on the game play side...and I think that's good.

We must remember that this may be some sort of beta version that John Rowland came up with...I think...some things may change before what we finally see in our hands. But I think this game shows promise.

Is it a perfect game? Hardly, there's much to be done by you wonderful patch makers. Is this a better game than FIFA 2002? Definitely. Does it warrant another $45 out of our packets? It's really hard to tell. The game play improvements are incremental...the ball physics are still wacko...the kits could be better...the pitch is terrible (although there is a penalty spot! Wow!)...the replays (with multiple views of the same play...even on some closely missed opportunities)...the graphics and the stadium are beautiful. Same old EA...same old stuff. But you know us...we'll buy it...share it...and improve it. That's what this community does. Myself...I'm waiting for the Socceraccess patch. More later. Hopefully soon you'll be able to check me out on the MRA patch review site. More on that later as well.
Cheers,

re: wc 2002 review

mutiger, excellent review. I also want to expand a few points for discussion:

1. Tackling: tackling with D or A both result in a sliding tackle, so what is the difference?

2. Corner kick: there is no number icons, has it been eliminated ?

3. Ball's trail: when shooting at the net, is it considered an improvement?

4. Price: $45 is (a little) too much considering the price of fifa 2002 has gone down to $20. Despite some good improvements...

5. the last point I want to make is what I've seen in the demo was very limited. No sound, only 2 teams, no options to change. I also read an ad about wc 2002 will use a separate button for header but no way I could prove that with the demo(!).

"the pitch is terrible (although there is a penalty spot! Wow!)..."

I'm tempted to say what we all hate to hear: It's only the prerelease alpha beta xyz version of the demo, so cut it some slack! In fact, I will give in to my temptation right now.

It's only the prerelease alpha beta xyz version of the demo, so cut it some slack! :-)

More to the point though, if you grab V-9's "All Options" patch, you can crank up the detail and the pitch (as well as the players) will look at least as good as FIFA 2002's. Although you're right, at the default settings, it looks pretty much like ass. ;-)

Good discussion starter

Lyhong,
Good points. Yes, the ball trrail is annoying as all get out. That's an EA sports thing...they do it with their hockey titles and with their baseball titles as well. It actually helps track the puck and ball...but in the soccer game...it's really unnecessary and I think it's there just as something they would consider "cool" for the non soccer fans out there.
I was also disappointed by the lack of targets on free kick, corner and throw-in situations. This is a little bit more like the old, old FIFA titles ('97 comes to mind), but I've got a feeling it will be there in the final build.
I do like the new tackles though...I think they're a little more realistic...although the ability for a player to do a quick little slide, then bounce right up with the ball is not right. I don't notice the defender stretching for balls when they make steals any more...and that's not quite right either.
Glad you liked the review. Let's keep the thread going...and wait for the socceraccess World Cup patch. From what I've seen, that may make EA sports WC 2002 obsolete before it even arrives in stores!

Hey man,
Good to hear from you again. I was afraid you had left the community altogether. Yes, you're right it's just probably a beta...and even I think a dubious one at that. Would EA float a build ahead of time to guage reactions...or is that giving them too much credit for caring what we actually think!
Anyway...now that you're back...stay in touch...we need all the good writers out here we can get!

I really like the game. The different set of skill moves is pretty impressive. Players go after ball going out of play. The ball was going out of play and my player actually slid to keep it in play. The passing is a bit more smooth. It's alot easier to fast break and build up. No numbers on corners is kind of annoying. And the ball tracker takes some time to get used to. All in all i'm pretty impressed.

re: wc 2002 review

To continue this thread, I will add a couple of additional observations:

1. The track of the ball going into the net seemed "always" curved in horizontally instead of straight in as in fifa 2002, it was obvious in all the replays. I can't say it is more realistic, do you?

2. In another thread, somebody said that he scored 6 goals and wc 2002 asked if he want to go up to the amateur level. but I scored 8 goals in one match but it did not ask anything, and still got to "pause" and "exit windows". (editing note: we can, of course editing the ini.big to move up the level).

3. (added when editing) I also noticed that the professional level of wc_2002 is a lot easier than the same level of fifa 2002. For one thing, the options of the PR levels are different. This I consider as an improvement.

On the plus side, the graphics seemed to improve a good deal, e.g. the faces of Henry and Zidane.
