PS2 stuttery with variable gamespeed

My PS2 version of FIFA 2004 seems to stutter every so often as if low fps rate is on the cards. Also the gamespeed seems to be smooth when play is quick, with long balls etc, but slow with close quarter football.
Anyone have any ideas about this, or are experiencing similar probs?

everyone probably experiences the slow down....dont know about the xbox and GC owners, but i guess they probably have some slow down too

i play it on the xbox and the speed is just perfect. its not super unrealistic fast like the old fifas. EA have done a good job for once
