I've looked up, down, and sideways for the ps2 aerow files, would someone mind posting them?

I know they won't work as is with pes4 pc, but I'd love to take a look at them. Thanks.

Just how different are they?

The ps2 files are ~2kb and the pc ones are 14-25kb...

...meaning the solution to our dilemna isn't going to come from the ps2 files. Someone out there is going to have to decode the .bin's from scratch. It will happen though. MDL files are semi common and games that use them such as NWN and HL inevitably come out with editors. Its just a matter of time and someone with the know-how becoming interested enough in it to work it out.

Considering the community has worked out how to open the texture bin files, and that there are too many games to list that use *mdl.bin files for graphics that have been decrypted I hardly think it to be an impossibility.

Now whether it will happen before Konami releases a game that makes the effort futile is another matter.

ok, you know best.
I'd love to see some of the mdls that have been altered for previous versions, all the new stadiums we got etc (there was one ball edited, and claims of a stadium, that was it). Just because the files are called mdl doesn't mean they are encrypted the same.

I thought the same as you John, same hope sice pes3 ps2 and pc relase over year ago
ps2 had fevernova, pc didn't
nobody cracked mdl files, many ppl tried it at many forums

when pes4 was around the corner, Ariel messed with hexes and made smth what looked almost like Aerow but with many bugs unfortunately
we have no knowledge how Konami guys builded their mdl files, no chances to break it by yourself; you can open both pc and ps2 mdl's in hexeditor and compare and you'll only see milion of digits, no similar areas to copy and paste, like some ppl thought it could work
all different, all mess; manualy changing random digits and importing it to game, run the game, browse menus, start the match and see how ball looks like or crash
then back to hexeditor, change it back, change next value and import to game, run it, browse through menus, start the match and crash
.....
.....
....
....
after 20 you're enough tired or bored (or both) to continue and keep tracking the rest of 999.999.999 values you have to check, and then 1.000.000.000.000.000 of its combinations to be so lucky and find out how some ball areas start to be visible after changing which digits
it's could be a punishment for serial killers, not patching fun for editors you know

Its not a matter of hex editing the mdl file, its a matter of opening the bin file to get the mdl out. In the same way that ball texture files are opened up and there is a bmp/tga/png file inside. You can't modify ball17tex.bin by hex editing to change the way the ball looks. Well, I suppose you could, but as you pointed out it would take many more man hours than its worth.

An mdl file is a text based file that tells the game how to render the graphic. They can be easily modified with notepad.

http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/online/formats/mdl/

The issue is figuring out how the bin file is encrypted to get that mdl out. I don't pretend to know to decrypt files from scratch, but someone out there does as we have this splendid Graphic Studio.

Again, this is a mute point though. :crazyboy:

and again, they know how to decrypt Texture files and they seem to be struggling with the new ones.
And just because they are named mdl, doesn't mean they are the same format either!
However your theory is a valid one

I don't know if I remember well but I think (or dreamed..dunno) mdl bin files are compressed with Zlib Tool just like .str files
normally .str files were just loads of digits but after decompressing it became normal text files easy to edit in hex editor (with strings used in game menus)

so, if normally mdl looks messy, maybe after decompressing it'll appear to be more "patchmaker friendly"
I have no Zlib Tool anymore (deleted it by accident) so if anyone has time (especially all of those "someone make AEROW goddammit!!" dudes) then they could work with it a bit to see how it goes

Hi guys

Actually I already edited mdl files, but only on PC version, as I never got to understand the PS2 ones. I just modified the bodyxx_mdl.bin files to get rid of the badges on the national teams' models.

What I don't get is what modification you want to apply to the ball model, as I must warn you that in my present knowledge of the file structure, not everything is possible.

I found and hosted ZlibTool and I checked - ball models are compressed files too! (like .str files)
download here (37 kb)

unpack, run and drag & drop ball mdl into top window, it will decompress file so it will look a bit different (more handy maybe?)

to edit ingame menus we had to decompress str files, then they looked normal so we could edit them and compress back, then import to game
I guess maybe we could do the trick with decompressed ball models either? by comparing decompressed ball PS2 and PC models or smth...

I extracted all PC md's and seems that PC mdl's are about 3x bigger than PS2 mdl's, it's all about:

- how pc mdl's are linked with texture, they have to have something osculate
- how ps2 mdl is linked with ball texture

join these two facts
simply :D
