Pride or Money?

Hi guys,

i was watching the netherlands vs australia friendly on tv. and then he people i was watching it with decided to throw opinions around. i was the baby of the group at 20. the next person was around 38, so there was a gap and i could easily have been disregarded.

my question is this: do footballers get paid to play internationals and world cup matches?

the main person i was arguing with said yes they are paid most definitely. now i thought back to when pavel nedved said he would not play for the czechs because if he gets injured juventus loses out. he said juventus pays me to play and it will be no good if i am injured at international level.

my dad agreed with me that playing for the country was all about playing with pride and that it was unpaid.

can you guys help me shed some light on this matter?

As far as I know, players don't get paid for playing for their NT. During international tournaments ,though, they will get money if they reach certain stages or win the tournament. Otherwise, its for pride.

Maybe they're different from other nations, but players for the United States do get paid a salary, even for friendlies.

Under the new pact, U.S. players will earn $37,500 for making the World Cup roster, $3,750 for each Cup appearance and $3,000 per friendly, Associated Press reported. During World Cup qualifying, bonuses of $1,350 to $6,000 will be paid to each player for victories and draws, depending on the opponent. Bonuses for friendlies range from $750 to $5,250.

I think players should be paid in bonuses, while clubs should be paid a certain amount to compensate for their player being away. After all they are the main reason that that player was good enough to make the NT, so they should receive something in return, instead of a player who has been risked with injury.

WEll Paolo Montero once said that his contract with Juve once had a clause where he'd lose a pretty big % of yearly pay if he got injured in an International. But said he never cared and for him Uruguay Qualifyers was "more important than the CL Final" (Actual quote) . For that reason he's always been a favorite player of mine.

But yeah, they sacrifice alot to play for the NT and it can be said that they actually lose money (or sacrifice their careers for playing for not much, in the South American nations I mean).

For me, If I was an aspiring U20 player in Liverpool, my "Dream view" of the future would be playing for my NT at the World Cup than in any big "League/Cup match" (that's why I think it's important how much importance they show to the Kids around the world for any National Team.)
