Ponting points finger at 'selfish' Lara

Youth Team
A week on from Brian Lara's epic quadruple-century against England in Antigua, and the backlash has begun Down Under. None other than Australia's captain, Ricky Ponting, is leading a chorus of players and commentators who believe that Lara's innings was self-centred, and has done the game more harm than good.

"It's hard to imagine an Australian player doing it," Ponting told AAP, notwithstanding the fact that Matthew Hayden came within 20 runs of doing exactly that against Zimbabwe last October. "It's generally not the way we play our cricket. Their whole first innings might have been geared around one individual performance and they could have let a Test match slip because of it. They ran out of time in the game - that's not the way the Australian team plays."

Nevertheless, Ponting conceded that Hayden's 380 at Perth did involve an exception to the team rule, as he was allowed to carry on batting with the record in sight. "It was a very rare thing, for Matty to be able to bat for as long as he did and go on and make that big score," said Ponting. "He was given the opportunity to go on and break Brian's record and he did that. He was going to be given another half an hour, or 20 minutes, to try to get to 400 but unfortunately he got out."

Ponting is one of a clutch of batsmen with the ability to overhaul Lara's new record, although he was adamant that the team always comes first where Australian cricket is concerned. "Everyone will be chasing it, and it would be nice to be the world-record holder," he admitted, "but as we've seen, it doesn't necessarily win you a Test match, which is what we're all about." Mind you, if Australia's Test series goes ahead against the weakened Zimbabweans next month, victory will be a foregone conclusion even before any thoughts turn to the record-books.

Ponting's sentiments have struck a chord with the former England captain and leading commentator, Tony Greig. "I'm certainly not raving about the innings," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. "I have to praise it for the sheer fact that he stayed in for so long but it wasn't an innings that you could be in awe of. It was clear he had the record in mind and was just going to keep on grinding it out until he got there. As far as I'm concerned that is not a good way to play the game, especially when you're the captain. It shows that Brian Lara is not a very good captain."

"It gives cricket fans there the chance to be euphoric for a while," added the ABC commentator, Jim Maxwell, "but there are big problems in cricket over there. There's a lack of discipline, a lack of talent and the wrong people are in charge. Lara has been an inconsistent performer as leader. He's 34 and this innings will give him more time, that's all. It's a shame because there are a lot of people over there who love cricket. But it's fallen apart."

But Derrick Nicholas, the chief operations manager of the West Indies Cricket Board, had quite the opposite view. "It's quite extraordinary," he said. "I was in Antigua when he broke the record. The tributes were coming in from all the [Caribbean] heads of government; the feeling around the whole Caribbean has been fantastic. We believe Brian's innings will renew interest from children in cricket."

wtf? just because he can't break any record doesn't mean others aren't allowed to

he's just being gay that the record doesn't belong to australia anymore

I know nothing about cricket. Can someone clarify exactly what record he set, and what the hell an "innings" is?

LOL how bitter is that?. I have enough respect for Australian cricket and the team but im glad Lara got the record back because he IMO is the greatest batsman of all time, or atleast top 3 material. Very bitter and jealous, then again when England won the Rugby World Cup, we was told we was boring and a one man team, very sore losers, but that's why they are so good at alot of sports i guess.

Big F*Cking Whoop. You win ONE sporting trophy in 30years and its like

"How about the Rugby?"

Yet when we win it like every 3rd time the Tourney is hosted and you just brush it aside? How about the Cricket? Hm? Win the Ashes and then brag... bitch.

As for Ponting's comments I agree with him. Lara was selfish but in good reason. The series was lost and it was the only bright thing from the series for a West Indian. I am sure if the series was at 1-1 Lara would of not gone on to score 400*.

i may have agreed with him if he didn't go back and completely contradict himself

All i said was the English rugby team didnt get the repsect they deserve, u call me a b!tch, yet if i say it i would get a warning and prob a yellow card....pathetic. i was totally quoted out of context.

It's not bitter at all..

Ive been saying the same thing in the Brian Lara thread for ages now...

Australians put the team first, to me that isnt bitter at all...

Lara put himself first, and the team drew the test...Even Tony Greig said it wasnt an innings that he was in awe of...

I think that you need to read more son...

Lara is captain. He put himself before his team, you cant do that...

As for Hayden, he didnt make the decision Steve Waugh did, AND Im sure Lara didnt put any time limit on himself. He got to 400 when he got there...

Hayden only got out because he was having a dash, trying to get to 400 in time...

Think before you write Mr Power ;)

I still dont think that Australians are sore losers, infact I think that the English are 'sore' winners if their is such a thing. They win and just go over it and over it...I can assure you that the English side winning the Rugby World Cup has been brought up many more times since ive been in London then Ive brought up the Ashes, the Cricket World Cup, or any of the numerous other sports that we beat England in.

We lost the Rugby World Cup, yes it was on the boot of one man (Ive proved this statistically before-England got less penalties in our half then we did in theres, so it wasnt 'the forwards hard work', but we couldnt get the three points every time like they could)...Im over that. I still say that New Zealand are the best Rugby side in the World, with Australia and England close behind. England NOW are a worse side than Australia (since retirees after the last world cup) altho with Rogers out, we mightnt show that in the upcoming tests. The World Cup final, need I remind you, was a draw, and was won in extra time. Test matches dont go to Extra Time, so really the sides are equal based on that one match. You won the World Cup tho, and I wont take that away from you. NZ were unlucky in that they beat Australia twice in the year, but lost in the World Cup semi...

Anyway, rant over..

I wasnt just talking about the final. England was getting slagged off throughout the whole tourney. I don't go on about the World Cup, i stopped talking about it the day after it happened. Im much more interested in football and boxing. Cricket is another matter, Australia are the best cricket side in the world, not just that, from 1999-present i say they are the best cricket side of all time, almost invinsible

Lara didn't prolong anything at all. At the end of the first day he said he was looking for a score of 750 on this wicket.

Jealousy is a bitch.:kader:

Aussies just dont like the fact that His Excellency Brian Charles Lara and Bradman are now being mentioned in the same breath.

Get over it!

His Excellency should have gone on to make 500 just to piss them off some more.:hump:

Although I think Punter should have kept his gob shut, this is simply wrong. Bradman is on another stratosphere to everyone, including Lara. Lara could make 800 and he'd wouldn't be a pimple on the great man's arse.

Come on, you got to give His Excellency Brian Charles Lara at least a place as a pimple on Don's ass.:(

He deserves it.(H)

maybe a pimple but no-one will nor should be mentioned in the same breath as The Don, because he was the best batter in the histpry of the game and unless someone else comes along and averages 99.94 or better well they can be in the same breath.

It's English men in general. When England won the Rugby World Cup they just used that as an excuse now in any sporting arguement and mention 20-17. Yet the 4 years previously everytime an Australian mentioned the RWC they just brushed it aside like it was "nothing".

And I wouldn't card you if you called me a bitch ... bitch :crazyboy:
