Playmakers/Targetmen

I'm surprised that this section is so dead, used to be very active. Anyway, how do you use your playmakers/targetmen, how are they effective? I don't mean stats, I've got that covered.

Right now I vary my tactic depending on whose fit and what not, playing 4 at the back with a DM and one or two MC's and AM wingers with my targetman/men forward. Sometimes I swap a striker/MC for an AMC. Now, I've got my playmakers set to a higher creative freedom than the rest of the squad, as well as a mixed passing style instead of direct. I've got all my creative midfielders as playmakers, with the MC's first choice, and wingers last. Is that a good way to do it? Or should you just use one playmaker?

Regarding the targetmen, they're Drogba and Huntelaar, so when I play both, I have them both set as targetmen and to hold up the ball. Suggestions? Should I feed either of them in a particular way? I've noticed that although they7 score goals, they're not the goal a game/every other game kind, with most of my goals coming from the midfield and defense.

Honestly, ever since CM01/02 ive never managed to get a decent-working formation that uses playmakers and/or target men. Its just so.. 80s-90s, Maybe they still work, i just havent managed to get a formation working with thiose options enabled

I have a few questions about Targetmen/Playmakers

1) I've assumed as long as I can remember on CM/FM that you can only play with 1 target man and 1 playmaker. I thought that the first listed player was the playmaker, and the second listed guy was the playmaker if the first guy wasn't in the lineup. Sort of like penalty takers or free kick takers. If I set Dani Alves as #1 and Xavi as #2, Xavi will never take a free kick with Alves on the field. But I've recently heard about people using multiple playmakers/target men, and it confuses me.

2) I don't usually notice any difference in play if I use a target man. Ideally I like to play with a target man like Drogba, to hold up the ball with his back to goal and play through balls to wingers and charging midfielders, but it seems impossible to do in this game because teams keep their shape unrealistically well (to the point that it severely limits legitimate offensive opportunities). If I set target man to "head" or "run onto ball" I'm sure I would notice it, but that seems like a very unsophisticated way to play.

3) The only noticeable change I have seen by using a playmaker is when I was experimenting with some various Total Football-esque techniques. I was Arsenal and I had everyone on short passes at a very quick tempo. Cesc was my playmaker and I believe he was the only player I had in the middle of the park. I think I played a 4-3-3 with ML/Rs and FL/Rs, but not positive. Anyway, Cesc was running all over the pitch and made a million passes, and offensively it was pretty cool because we never lost possession. But it was ridiculously susceptible to a counter attack. Other than that, I've never noticed a difference by assigning a playmaker (or multiple playmakers?).

1. Playmaker just means that your team's players will look for that player. I usually have three or four in the same lineup. AM/Support striker, Wingers, and a CM, and sometimes full backs. It just means your team will get the ball to people who are capable as fast as possible, stops defenders dallying on the ball.

2. Hmm, don't know what to say, when Trezeguet(my target man) is clicking, he's always flicking on passes to my wingers. I have him set receive headers, so you might have to specify in the team instructions with how you want your target man to receive the ball to notice some change. I've read at the SI forums that target man and playmaker are virtually the same thing, so, yeah, you could try that.

The only time i ever use a Target Man is when i'm leading a game and in the last 20 mins or so. Direct passes and a pacey Target Man set to Run Onto Ball. Counter Attacked ticked too.

A pretty straight forward (but effective) counter to a team pushing for an equaliser.

That's actually really helpful, didn't know that. Always related it to a striker for some reason...

Yeah, there actually isn't much difference between playmaker/target man, they're essentially the same thing. Instructions and PPMs are more important.

I always have counter attack ticked. I find that my team misses a lot of opportunities when it's not.
