Player switching

Does anyone else find the AI player switching a bit annoying? I'm talking about the way the computer picks the player you get to control when defending. I've noticed that it doesn't pick the player closest to the ball, which is especially frustrating on breakaways. It's not what I want most of the times.

Yeah, I hate it sometimes too. Most of the time I dont notice or care tho.

there's a bar in the options menu to fix that

Are you talking about home + away auto switching? If so, should I increase or decrease the bars? What do they mean?

decrease both bars to 0

I've done that and maybe it's improved just a little but the game still doesn't switch to the closest defending player.
