Well the next big thing will be Pixel Shader 4 for the PC (we're currently on 2.0b ATi / 3 nVidia) and looks like it will make a pretty big improvement to graphics.

Here's some shots from the new Unreal Tournament 3 Engine which uses it:

they are the ss of the new Unreal ; but not ingame ... there's no graphic card which can render this polygons real-time ingames ; also 6800's cannot make this ... and there is a few graphic card which can render them with this GI , UW's , maps , lights , polygons , shaders etc ... but not real time ... maybe Quadro 3000 and higher can make it ; but only CG and not real-time animated ... and I don't think there's no graphic card which can render them real-time animated ... for example in the first picture , there's more then a million polygon I think ... it's amazing ... but it can't be real time ... and for games ; it's impossible now ... also for Cg it isn't imposible now ... sorry but ; they aren't ingame ... maybe a SLI Quadro can render but it's impossible ... I can't say anything for SGI's of course but I've never seen and never heard about it ... sorry for my bad english ...

very true...i dont think any of the current gfx cards will be able to render these gfx very easily. These don't look like ingame ss

this engine won't come out until 2006 due to the lack of hardware capable to handle this.

not only polygons ... 2 million polygons are nothing for a Quadro even a GeForce 6 series ... a Quadro 1300 or a GForce 6800 can make it in maya , max or anohther software also ingames ... but with lights (probably GI) , shaders and textures it's impossible now ... and I think it will be impossible in a few years ... there's only 1 character we can see ... can you imagine minimum 10 character like this and a very detailed map ... can you imagine the polygons ... billions of polygons ... real-time render ? ... ingame ? ... oh ; I can't imagine that ... but nothing is impossible in CG ... I've seen the GeFroce 6800 series introduction ... it can render 5 million of polygons ingame ... it's ok ... but there was only 1 character ... not a map ... background was dark and thereisn't any GI ... only 1 spot light and I think 10 or 15 omni lights ... and there was no reflection and refraction ... it ok with 5 milllion polygons like this ... but a game ; a big big game with characters ; maps ; lights etc ... it's hard ... for now ; it's impossible ...

you mean if we want to have such beautiful graphic for every characters and maps requirement a super duper performance hardware support?

why can't CG implement in game? is it the same problems as well?

I'm talking about real-time render ... real-time render is a really difficult thing ... without lights and such other thing ; an average graphic card can handle it ... but with lights , shaders and more than a million polygons ; any graphic card cannot handle ... real-time render is very complicated ... not only graphic card ; CPU is very important for that ... apart from real-time render ; it must be animated ... if yoa watched any film making ; you can see none of these studios use high-poly objects ... they use low-poly object for real-time and after they render them high-poly and with other things (shaders , lights etc ...) ... for example ; a GeForce 6800 and a 64 bit Intel CPU can calculate a very basic cloth simulation with 100 frame and 25 fps ; in 2 minutes minimum ... but there's nothning around ... just a plane with a very low detailed texture ... no bump ; no displacement map etc ... except from the fact ; in these pictures there's lights ... but not only 1 light ... there's GI (global illumination ; means day light simulation) ... and GI ; is very hard thing for render ... if you use any of these animation prgorams (maya , max etc ...) you can understand me ... but if you didn't ; I suggest you to use these programs (demos of course) and you can understand me ... there's v-ray , mental-ray ... these modelled and renderedn in 3DS Max ... there's reflections and refractions ... it really hard things to render ... and real-time render of this things ; is impossible now ...
