PESers views on FIFA2003 demo

Just wondering what you guys think of the new fifa demo

My opinion so far:
Graphics are nice if you hit the system requirements sweet spot, runs at about 3 fps on my Athlon 1.333 with geforce 2mx at 640x480 but on my mates athlon 2ghz with geforce4 4400 it runs perfectly at 1280x1024(which the demo automatically switches to without any ini altering)

Animations are better than previous efforts but still look very crude and sluggish when compared to WE6. Biggest problem I think is FIFAs animations are too long(too many frames) which leads to the annoying "having to wait for animation to stop before player responds" feeling.

Gameplay still isnt up to ISSPE 1 standards IMO and I'm still left with knackered thumbs after a game vs a human player...not so bad when playing CPU as theyll stand off you forever if you hold it in your half.

Interested to know what people who have tried football games other than fifa think.
PG.

Well, I played some games now and I have a pretty good idea what to think about it.
This one is the best FIFA-game sofar, but as Perth Glory said it is still no match for any Konami-soccer game.
After finding out about the gamepad-control, I played some matches.
The most remarkable thing is the keeper. Most of the time he saves the most unbelieveble shots, but another moment he collides with a defender and let in an easy goal.
The CPU is supposed to help you out with defending, but he doesn't position the defenders well enough, leaving wide gaps in defense.
He also does that for himself and that causes lots of shots on his goal. Last match I won 5-1, with 22 shots on goal.
This tells the story: The keeper is very very good (with exception of those clumsy goals) and he has to be, because the defenders let you easily slice thru them.
Probably this is a low level and maybe defenses are better in higher levels.
Conclusion: The AI need to tighten defense much more but the game is the best alternative if you don't have PES/WE

I'll cut to the chase. I didn't like it. They decided to seperate to ball from the players, good for them, here is their cookie. But, once you've played the games we play, you can see the flaws. Game speed, i'm not talking ball speed, i'm talking players speed. THey move so fast!!! What's up with that. Players can do a 180 in 0.01secs, that's not right. Player animations are better, but crude. I mean, i was trying to do a one touch pass around...couldn't do it effectively. Shooting...please. The game is better, but it just feels crude..not smooth enough. I can't imagine playing it for the next year. Good job EA, but try a lot harder next time...*the_man says under his breathe* better than PES, HA!!

I have mixed feelings about the game.
While it may be the best FIFA version so far, it just does not come close to WE6 or PES in overall terms.

The graphics are decent, I like the fact that the kits are up to date. The Delle Alpi stadium looks good. From some of the screenshots and videos, the stadia are very good.
The players look very skinny. Have you seen Ronaldo in the demo ? He looks anorexic , his face seems too big for his head in the close ups.

Anyway to the most important thing : Gameplay.
FIFA have improved a lot. I did'nt see too many bicycle kicks
or 360 spins. The passing has improved a lot.
Shooting is strange. The goalkeeping is too tough.
Corners are a nightmare. Free kicks are ok.
CPU assisted Defending (AI) seems non-existant. Your defenders
start running all over the place. The CPU attack just seems to
run instead of passing....

I like the fact that there are so many leagues, tournaments, etc.

But the overall feeling is that WE6 is miles ahead. Try playing the FIFA demo and then go back to play WE6. You'll notice the immense difference. WE6 is just too good to be true.

I just hope Konami can get their hands on the FIFPro license
and include more teams and leagues. That will wipe FIFA off the face of this planet.

But till then, FIFA 2003 is not a bad alternative if you are really desperate to play with the correct kits and Leagues.

Not to mention a SEPARATE button for heading...
You are right it doesn't feel good and the reason is because it is in unbalance: VERY good keeper and a VERY weak defence.
I suspect EA runned out of time during the developement.
When they didn't got the defence right they decided to place Superman in the goal :p

Still far from perfect, but it's one of the best FIFA footie game. Since there is no Konami's (PS2) recent soccer game here in the States  , and yes, I'd definitely buy a PS2 version for it.

If you guys all thought that it was a good game by FIFA standards, but still NOWHERE close to PES or WE, I can only imagine the type of wonderful praise it must be getting at the FIFA forum!!:D

Average...is the best word to describe it, sure its a improvement over the past Fifa games but not even near WE standard.

I specially hated the shooting and the animation of it.

Naahhh! Everybody said the following things:
FIFA has improved --- That's true
They are still miles away from the Konami quality --- That's even more true ! :p

still some FIF die-hards that think it's the best game ever though.

I played it, it's unplayable, an improvement, sure, but nothing compared to WE6.

Well I played it and like most of you thought it was a good effort by EA and will be one of the best Fifa's. I plan on getting it for the x-box because like most people here in the US dont have too many otions and as I have said before I still like playing in a proper league with Cl and Uefa cup. However, I have played ISS pe2 and we 2002 on a psx emulator and it sill isn't up even that gameplay i can only imagine what PES and WE6 have to offfer. As a matter of fact I think mls extratime 2002 has better gameplay as well. A good effort by EA but they still need work. The one thing that seemed weird to me was the way the players move. They seemed to try to emulate Konami but i think over did it. The turning when dribbling seemed weird to me.

Han,

As for the defence of AI I got a patch that allows you to select differnt levels and the defense seems better on the higher levels but still not great. I assume you played on Amatuer?

No, I have that patch too and played it on world class.
The problem is that the RB is not moving inwards to assist the CB if you threat to cross from the left and vice-versa.
Result: big gaps in the middle, which EA tried to (over)compensate with the strength of the keeper.
That way they try to get "realistic" scorelines.
Yesterday I already read about a world class match ending in 8-7  It is not the only positional problem: Just look howmany times two players are in each others way if they enter the same zone.... In any Konami-game the players make space for each other to avoid that.

I don't think I'll even bother downloading the demo. Somehow, I know exactly what to expect.

I keep hoping that EA will eventually get their act together and start to produce a worthy competitor to PES but the reality is that the gap in quality bewteen KCET's and EA's offerings is actually getting bigger, not smaller.

i think the game's good..but i still enjoy WE2002 a lot more..i was excited about it the 1st few days, but now its got boring..the 1st time i played it was marvel..with all the new animations and everything..but now im starting to notice the same sh1tty tranistions all over the place...the passing, running and shooting is way better than old fifa's ..but the AI still isnt as good as winning eleven.. still, fifa is a nice alternative.. i just wish konami released WE on pc...it would be such an orgasmic experience

I played the demo.

And just like everybody else says

Good for FIFA.
Not really good compared to WE6 or even WE5 and WE4 [psx].

I'd roam around the FIFA2003 forum and encounter people who claim that they have played PES/WE and still consider FIFA2003 to be a great game. Not forgetting to mention that PES/WE isn't that great/over-hyped wutever....

They also claim they have played PES/WE for quite a while and still come to the, seemingly, absurd conclusion.

I know its a free board. And people have different opinions but... dunno... its 'em people that I just can't understand.

I could write a whole book to say how PES/WE is better than any FIFA including the new demo.

Well, that'll be a waste of time.... rather be playing ML ^^

Yes I read that too and it was so absurd that I suspect those persons to lie out of frustration. I don't say that soon, but there is no other logical conlusion. They probably never played any Konami-soccer game.
Last days I was trying out FIFA 2003 to find out all good and bad things about it. After that I played PES again and with FIFA so fresh in mind you see very clear what a difference in class there is between those two games.
I remember an EA person, saying in a chat that FIFA 2003 will be as good, if not better than PES 2!
Was that ignorance of footbal-knowledge or a straight lie??
I think the last.... People do a lot to make money and EA is fixed on selling as much copies as possible, no matter the quality.

I don't want to generalise here, but one of the reasons I think FIFA gets a big following is because of the lack of PES2/WE6 in America, and therefore FIFA is the only game available in America. I feel alot of FIFA 'diehards' are American and propbably have very limited experience of PES. IF Konami actually made the game more available (ie in as many countries as possible) and released it multi-format , it would probably be the other way round.

Han

I never understood why Konami doesn't come with a version for America. I understood that soccer becomes very populair under young people (the older seems to keep ignoring it) and that would be quite some market for Konami!

Ok Han sorry. I played on semi-pro and didn't seem too bad. But that i think it one problem that EA has is that in the higher levels it trys to compensate this year with the goalies it looks like.

It still isn't a bad effort from EA and it is better than I thought it would be and like I said I plan on getting it for no other reason than being able to play Serie A and other leagues with the CL and Uefa Cups. I wish Konami would put some leagues in there game and the CL and Uefa cup. That to me is the 1 thing that Fifa has going for it.
