PES4 a dissapointment?

Maybe we've had some threads like this guys, but I haven't been around for a while and I was wondering if any of the PES veterans agree with me.

I bought PES4 as soon as it came out, and loved for the first 10 games. It was different, but the extra little tweaks made it impressive from the word go. I loved the volleys, the through balls, the powerful headers, the low cros was back and fast, the animations were superb and stroking the ball around the back was more realistic.

But then, huge gameplay issues surfaced for me, and a few of my friends who play WE/PES regularly.

We have since gone back to WE7I and it's a much much better game for my money. More balanced, addictive and most importantly, fun!

Things I cannot understand in PES4.

1. Less control. You lose the ball often because, even good players, cannot control it in midfield.

2. Ackward passing animations. They will sometimes pass with the outside of the foot, or to the wrong player. This usually happens if the player I'm trying to pass to is being marked, the player with the ball will pass to someone in that general direction. I want full control, if I make a mistake while pasing, I want to lose the ball because of it. I need no help from the computer.

3. Too many shots. We usually have 12-15 shots with 8-10 decent chances in a given game on 10min. This is unrealistic. It seems that the forwards will get an unfair advantage at times. This isn't scripted like FIFA or anything, but you can often turn the defender and leave him for dead.

4. Lose marking. Defenders often leave too much space for people without the ball. And it's difficult to make a tackle (see no. 3) so shots galore is often the result.

5. Seems slow and unresponsive at times. You'll get through the defense even with a move you didn't mean to make.

6. Standout players aren't really much better than average ones. Both have control problems and fluid dribbling is difficult, even with Ronaldinho. Something which didn't used to happen in WE7I, where you can tell the better player as soon as you receive with him. This may be due to the ackward animation of turning with ball at feet. Which sometimes takes a tad too long to look good.

7. Overall fun, building from midfield, trying different solutions and making good passes...it has all but dissapeared from PES4. It's just not as fun.

After a few weeks of playing it hard, we realised there are flaws, this game just wasn't up to the standard of WE7I, nevermind the changes to graphics, animations and a good few excellent improvements...the fun factor was missing gameplay wise.

So we went back to WE7I and there it was again. The beutiful game, perfectly balanced. Outsmart, outhink and outplay the opponent, instead of the winner being decided by a lottery of chances and better finishing.

Overall, PES4 is a HUGE dissapointment. I hope WE8LE will be back on track, hopefully Konami has realised that the product is just not as fun as it used to be, just one incarnation ago.

I hope, otherwise I will stick to WE7I untill Konami incorporates their old ways into new versions.

Who's with me? Who thinks I'm wrong?

peace

I never played PES4...just went straight to WE8I from WE7I.

Looking over that list though, in all the games i've played so far, i haven't noticed many of those problems.

And i was thinking just the opposite on point #6. I couldn't really tell that much of a difference between average players and superstars when i played WE7I. There's a very noticeable difference in WE8I in my opinion.

rraul, it's not about bugs man, or even crashes. It's about the stuff I posted.

Fumbler,

haven't tried WE8I, but on evo-web some guys reckon it's the same as PES4. Can't say.

What I mean is, the control seems not so skill dependent, as chance dependent. If you know what I mean.

I can notice the subtle control differences in WE7I easily, mind you, we played multiplayer tournaments with 6-8 people 3 times a week (sometimes untill 7am and once till 9am lol.) for well over 4 years.

It's good to have a massive gang of people that love football, and love PES. We were dissapointed with PES4 though, all of us noticed something missing.

Buy WE8 J-League and patch it with reefurs patch .. you`ll be amazed..or you can wait and get WE8LWE.

Is WE8 J-league more balanced? I heard it was, but I was in Croatia and BiH at the time and I couldn't get my hands on it..

It's hard to put into words, but PES4 dissapoints me, I feel empty while playing. Like I'm playing a game, not a match. If you guys get that...difficult to explain, but the soul of the game has been removed. A shame.

Yup....GoalStorm 97. Been here (with gool ol Seabass) since then. Reading the initial post, I had also surmised that perhaps you needed to spend a bit more time with it. And, tell the truth, knowing your knowledge and who you are, was surprised. Have we been dissapointed with a new one yet?.....No. Have we been hesitant when we get that 'new one' to think its better?....Every time-Yes. But, I always find that good ol WE magic is found after a considerable amount of time with the 'new one'. Ive found the refs to give waaay more PK's, quite hard to score from the corner, but the passing is SOO refined Cro. The thru ball finally acts like it should. Its never ever been as good and as 'smart' as it is this year. Theres also a more realistic amout of space or room created by the players-which gets better every year-theres not someone right there all the time. I know theres space in WE7, but in WE8 they finally got the space on the wings more realistic which results in actually usable runs. Its not as constricted. The play control is better IMO due to the few new additions--the stop n face goal is good and useable. It takes a lil' more touch to do the 'run up dragging the ball sideways sidestep manuver' which was too easy last year. Now if only i could be as wicked with the Chipped Thru Ball....that hasnt been implemented as an effective means really since ISS Pro Evo and MLS....but boy, you were talking 'bout fun? Heh.
Id just say, I remember scoffing at a few of the new ones. Time will tell...:rockman:

Dude which version do u own? I compared the 3 and found the xbox version the least scripted. The PS2 version lost its feel due to the better graphix. The xbox has slicker and faster gameplay and much better animations. the pc version is no good cos Kcet added a huge buffer.

The software of the Ps2 is too outdated to implement great graphix and slick gameplay.

Look on gamespot.com for Ps3 preview shipping end of this year! :rockman: :rockman:

rastaman,

I know the routine man. It's tricky and difficult to get used to new versions. I found them ackward and weird at first, all except ISS Pro Evolution 2 which was a ripper from the word go. Funnily enough, the same was true with WE8 and PES4. I thought they were great. Don't get me wrong, I've given the game a good go, more than 2 months of playing non-stop. Vs the AI, one on one with a mate or my bro, 2 on 2 with other mates...hundreds of games. My analysis was made after all that, not to fall into the trap of being unreasonable to the new product, I gave it many shots. I still conslude the same, to my utter dismay. I really want to like this game...well, as much if not more than WE7I. I'm afraid time did tell.

For me anyway, hopefully LE fixes that.

soccerrulez,

that may be a part of the problem, the animations often take too long, by then the situation with the pass has also changed. You give it to a player, and you have just enough room, and a great angle to pass it off to the wing. But he messes up the easy control, takes an extra two steps and you screw up the entire attack because of slow animations and/or less control than previous versions.

Anooys the hell out of me....makes the game unbalanced..

Ahh, my friend. As I sit with this Xbox version, I wish they had the PS2 version for rent when I picked this up. Now, this is big. The Xbox's fatal flaw comes to light in a BIG way with all of us around here especially-the Controller. It is much better suited for PS2 for many reasons, and thus will also explain why the console PS2 version is quite possibly the best over PC. PS2 controllers have analog buttons AND shoulder buttons. The Xbox...lol. I laugh at these foolish White and Black buttons. Horrid planning-twin shoulder buttons allow for 10 times the accessible combinations. Its basically a trainwreck y'all on the Xbox controller. Yet, i spent an hour fixin all the teams names and am deep enough into ML (6 STAR difficulty-- won first league-and cup-currently 6-3-0 as AS Roma aquiring Owen copy (me;) ), Claudio Lopez, and Virota in off season) so im probably stickin to Xbox. The saving/loading is highly conveinient. But ugg...the controller. Im using some Mad Catz controller cuz the Black n Whites are at least higher. But Xbox's controller....pales infinitly to PS2's. The 2 analog 'triggers' are not nearly as smooth, or responsive as Ps2's 8 analog buttons. One the whole, Xbox games have an all too sterile feel to them anyway. One question.....Did they REALLY put that gray spot on the players heads as some meak attempt at a reflective lighting effect? Totally looks like the d00ds got a patch of grey hair. Surprised-Xbox can render reflections the best- funny stuff:crazyboy:

I agree with you man, i really prefer PES3/we7 to PES4/E8. I wish it was we7 that is online. The players feel too heavy in WE8 and i enjoy playing we7 over we8. A poor player can beat you in 8 if he knows how to use the through ball well, wheareas in 7 you need all round good skills to be able to beat an opponent. Even after i double the speed in PPES4 by unlocking it in the PES shop, the players still feels heavy. It is very nauseating sometimes playing PES4 especially online. Even tthough the dribbling is better in PES4, the heavy players, goal keeper standing still and the ability of the ball to easily pass through the defense with a through ball is a big step back in this years installment

I think you're right, I don't get the same feeling while playing W8I compare to WE7I, feel like I lost something that I had with WE7I, excitement, may be, i don't feel happy after scoring a goal anymore. and the way the keeper standing still just drives me nuts. it looks like I will not spend a lot of time with WE8I...:( wait for gran turismo 4 then.

Wicked big point. Wth IS up with the 'stand still' goalie??? I saw that in the first 5 minutes I had with the game and thought of this site to come yak about it. Theres never been anything remotley that shoddy of goalie performance in these games. Im still on the side of the fence that says 8 is superirior. WE7 is too easy. Far too easy. I have to max out the difficulty and then make lame adjustment like never use 4-3-3 or ill kill em. I resorted to matching to comps formation like with 2 forwards to make it harder. WE7 is a cakewalk. The difficulty is improved on 8. Although, im on 6 stars and in 10+ games in Div 2 ive been scored on ONCE. Pellizoli in goal, but....even in WE7...i never get scored on.
Dig this: 9/10 goals ive scored were from a double tapped cross deep on the wing that crosses to a diving header...seen it way too much. Also some short range shots miss waaay too bad.

I rarely play against the AI, only multiplayer with mates. That's where this game shines.

But the latest installment just isn't up to scratch...no feeling of achievment.

i really surprise that ythe stand still keeper doesn't bother you. First, I admit the WE8i is better than 7 in many ways and the keepers in WE8I are much quicker than they are in 7, but they are not supposed to stand and look when the ball flying just 1 cm from the post like that, they're supposed to react man, and it's not that they're stand still becase the ball is going to fast, they stand and look whenever the ball is very close to the post from outside the goal or sometime even when the ball hit the left and right posts, it just looks to damn unrealistic, and jt bothers me alot. and by the way, too much chip shot inside the box when I expect a powerful kick, too bad.
