PES3 vs FIFA 2004 from an unbiased FIFA fan

Sky Reloaded

Reserve Team
No irony there. I am only a FIFA fan by default... because I have never really touched another soccer game. I have played

FIFA Soccer 96 (lol, bundled in a 32 in 1 gameboy cartridge)
FIFA 98
FIFA 99
FIFA 2001 (i cant rememer 2000 so i must have not played it)
FIFA 2002 (the one with the cheap curve shots)
FIFA 2003 (freshest concept)
FIFA 2004
The 25 cent coin-op soccer game at the arcade, wacky as sh*t, forgot the name but last time i played it was 4-5 years ago as a kid, i go to the mall with my sister and force her into the arcade.

Initial Impression (Intro) - FIFA 2004
PES3 - Many people say they love the intro, I didn't though. It was alright, but maybe because I sold my PSX 3 years ago and never got a console again, and I"m used to the Final Fantasy type CG animations. Not that i hate console, just that i dont have time to take care of a PS2.
FIFA 2004 - Solid as always, real life capture, excellent intro.

Graphics - FIFA 2004
PES3 - Looks pretty good, not as arcadish as I thought (I was thinking something like Nero Gero). I'm not an eye candy freak though.
FIFA 2004 - If I had to choose then I'd choose FIFA graphics. I'm sure most would agree with me anyways. But this is not a hands down thing. I liked the PES match intro, but their crowd render sucks just like FIFA, cardboard style. So FIFA barely wins on Graphics thanks to their realistic faces and motion captured animations.

Sound - FIFA 2004
PES3 - Well the sound on PES is pretty good, menu music reminds me of the PS games I play on my PC using Bleem!, commentary OK. But.......
FIFA 2004 - The crowd chants are what blows me away. Commentary is also better than PES, I like McCoist's accent. Some people say the chants are repeated but I didn't really notice.

Gameplay - PES3
PES3 - Undeniable... the "fun factor" goes to PES3.
FIFA 2004 - That's not to say FIFA sucks though. Personally I feel that comparing FIFA 2004's gameplay to PES3, is like comparing a situation like this: go play soccer with some friends, or go to the arcades. If you want realism then FIFA wins slightly, if you want pure fun factor then PES3 is more fun. I think this is where EA failed... they spent too much time and money on the realism factor that they failed to make the game very fun. And let's face it, we play computer games to have fun, if we wanted a realistic feel we would go for the fresh air.

Multiplayer - Omitted
I don't play multiplayer.

Replayability - Unsure, but probably PES3
Because I uninstalled and returned FIFA 2004 without many regrets, so in the long run I'll probably stick with PES3.

Creating Players - PES3 by a longshot
FIFA 2004 - None yet, so I used 2003's Creation Center with some assumptions that this year's would be a bit better.
PES3 - No matter how I "assume" this year's creation center to be awesome and worth the wait, I can't imagine how it would be better than PES3's creation mode. It just blew me away. If you guys thought FIFA 2002's creation was in depth, where you can choose facial features and stuff, PES3's is even better! You can choose a dozen of eyes, then tilt or "slant" the eyes, choose a nose and make it higher or wider, same with mouths and chins, MOLD the face into something that looks like you! I almost lost sleep last night thinking about the face I made that looks like me!

Conclusion - PES3

To be completely honest, I'm not a hardcore gamer, I don't HATE either games, but if I had to make a decision, I take PES3 because of the more fun gameplay and the awesome creation mode. Also FIFA is 2 CDs, PES is 1 CD, which takes less space which is just icing on the cake for me and my low end computer.

P.S.- This review is slightly biased about the creation mode, but completely unbiased on the two games themselves. I know PES3 doesn't have real names and kits and stuff, but future patches will fix that so no worries there. It would be stupid to buy FIFA 2004 solely on player/team names and jerseys, unless you are a moron and don't even know how to download/apply a patch. If you have such problems, I advise you to stick with FIFA 2004, it has the up to date rosters and transfers in the box. PES3 requires updates, tweaks, edits etc etc.

I agree on graphics (FIFA is always better in that area ,but PES is not far behind) ,and music (Konami never pays much attention to that ,EA always does).
But what stunned me is that you think FIFA has more realism than PES.Don't get me wrong ,I respect your opinion but I can't believe you think FIFA is more realistic.I think THAT'S where PES wins easily.
Also ,I think chants are very good in PES.I'm Croatian and what amazed is that when I'm playing with Croatia ,the fans yell "Hrvatska!".Stunning.I have never heard that in any other game.
But the sound and graphics is EA's attempt to make up for bad gameplay. They basically pay more attention to the looks of the game rather than the gameplay.

Anyway ,PES outclasses FIFA in the most important thing ,and that's gameplay. The rest is just secondary stuff.

Here's my two cents. Bear in mind I quit playing FIFA in 2001. 'Cos I got bored.

Intro
Have to say that FIFA takes this. They'll probably never match the greatness of FIFA RTWC's Song 2 rock-fest. It gets you fired up for it, you know?

PES opt for the classy approach. You wouldn't expect anything less from the Japanese, mind. They're not really as good as FIFA's openers.

FIFA 1-0 PES

Graphics
PES has some lovely touches but it doesn't really intend to pour the effort into the graphics. Having said that, the grass is probably the finest turf I've seen in any footy game. FIFA is polished but I get the feeling EA try to hard with it. It just looks a bit over done.

Can't really draw a winner between this aspect. There's more effort in EA's graphics but there's a few rough edges, IMO.

Presentation
Here's where EA excel. The presentation for the games is simply head and shoulders above the rest. They really make an effort into trying to re-create the feeling of live TV Coverage. Albeit in a very American way. It seems realistic in that respect.

PES however, slightly lacks in that area. Games are presented in a rather flat way. You get the basics, i.e. team formations and line-ups but it feels more 'International' if you catch my drift.

Sound
Well, with half the BBC commentary team in FIFA's corner, they easily get the play-by-play crown. There's more lines crammed in so there's less of a chance that the sound will get repetetive. PES's commentary is laughable. This is mainly due to some dire script writing from those Japanese fellas at Konami. 'Tis a shame because Peter Brackley was a legend. On the other hand, some commentators are just s**t. The mighty John Motson never fails to impress but Mark Lawrenson should be put against a wall with Chris Waddle and shot.

Atmosphere
Now this is a tough one. PES3 shows a real improvement in the game's atmosphere. It gives you the feel of a fantastic match and the crowd really get behind the teams. They do this in FIFA too. Credit to both EA and Konami for managing to pull this off.

Gameplay
Right. The most important aspect of the game. FIFA's seems just a little sluggish, IMO. You feel like you're controlling a fat man stuck in tar. The controls just don't feel so fluid as they were in the days of World Cup '98. And the off-the-ball stuff. Why did they need to include them? I much prefer the PES method where the AI just moves into position for you. It's too much to worry about for a lazy man like me.

With PES, shooting (especially in dead ball situations) is an artform and you'll spend ages in the training mode just trying to pull off some moves and shots. The passing is really responsive and fluid and there's so much versatility to it.

PES wins the gameplay stakes hands down. It just feels more like a game of football.

Replay value
You could argue that FIFA has so much in terms of competitions and stuff to play for. It's fine if that's what you want. PES offers you the likes of the training centre where you can win extra players, the Master League that can keep you going for ages but that's not why I keep coming back.......

PES feels so rewarding when you play a good game. If you score a stunning goal, you feel like you've deserved it. The game's so unpredictable you can struggle for one result but cruise to victory in the next. That's football, isn't it? The game just plays so well that you have to keep coming back for more.

Multi-player

PES - Go 'round your mates and kick their heads in. Great fun.
FIFA - Go on to the internet and hammer some faceless prick from Cambodia.

Hmmmmmmmmm..... Mates? Complete Stranger!? Make your own mind about that one.

FIFA is more real in terms of gameplay 'feel'. Its much to easy to do tricks and dribble past players in PES than FIFA now. I am enjoying PES more because FIFA is so hard to do this fun stuff. :P

Don't understand the graphics section. The graphics in FIFA no longer hold truth. PES is so much more realistic in gameplay and graphics

I discount the whole tricks and stuff. It's the way the opposition reacts that makes PES more realistic. They cut out passes and really punnish you with counter-attacks. Good defenders will hold a defensive line. They'll pull off offside traps.

Players will even have 'off-days'. Strikers hit goal droughts. Keepers will get iffy games and sometimes play absolute blinders. Players seem like individuals.

Get a striker like Beschaznyk and he'll score whenever he gets the chance but he won't stand a chance if he goes for a header. Crossing's a tough task. Defenders try to get ahead of their man. Aggressive players ocasionally lash out and some players are really hell to play against.

Good, instinctive strikers will run into space and pull defenders with them. Sitting on a one goal lead also often leads to a hectic last 10 minutes.

I don't know why you think the graphics in FIFA 2004 are better than PES3, because in my opinion, they are simply awful.

Look at the player models - the faces may look good, but what about the rest of the body, such as the hands being a different shade of colour to the forearms for example.

Then there's the kits, which look blurry and the colours seem to bleed into each other, because of something related to the poor quality texture mapping. And have you seen the names and numbers on the kits? They are blocky and smudged, not clear like they were in FIFA 2003. Very rough.

FIFA 2003's graphics, despite the smudged kits, were possibly the most realistic seen in any football game, but EA have taken a huge step backward with 2004. Perhaps they never heard of the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

PES3's graphics on the other hand look clear and smooth, though a tad arcadey... now if only we had real kits to see instead of fake ones :D

Few remarks after 2 day pes3 experience:

1. I try my standard screen resolution 1280x1024 (no problem with fifa) and I've got perfect bullet time - matrix football ;-)
back to 640x480 :-(

2. My fourth PES3 match Iran vs France. Standard settings. I loose 2:0 (as Iran ofcourse) and got 4 (four) red cards - yeah true realism (BTW at this moment I haven't found which button is for shooting)

3. Sixth match (I guess) this time I played France (easiest settings) and win 15:0 (I found out how to shoot :-) ). Iran players just stood still when I run with ball towards their goal.

Conclusion where do you (not you Sky Reloaded but all other PES lovers) get from idea that playing fifa is so easy maybe you try it on lowest settings as I did this with PES

BTW a moment ago Zlatan Ibrahimovic shoot penalty kick against my team. Ball hits the post and with second kick he scores - this is clearly against the law 14 of FIFA rules [I mean THE FIFA not FIFA2004 ;-)]

1. Yeah, that's a technical problem. Luckily, I have a PS2. Besides, Matrix footy's great for rounding the keeper.

2. You clearly got too aggressive or timed your challenges poorly. True realism:)

3. 'Course it's pisch on easy settings. Why else would the call it 'Easy'. To be fair, FIFA can be tough but eventually it comes to a point where you figure out an easy way to hammer the defence.

4. Rebounds are often scored in PES from penalty kicks. It's legal. Law 14!? Don't ever remember rebounds from penalty kicks being illegal. Point me to this rule 14 and I may beleive you.

Ok

to be exact

Law 14 - The Penalty Kick
...
Procedure
- the player taking the penalty kicks the ball forward
- he does NOT play the ball a second time until it has touched another player
...

post is obviously NOT another player ;-)

footballer you have too much time but you're correct, send an e-mail to Konami and EA telling them how wrong they both are.
