PES/WE Refesh Rates Question

If I set the resolution to 1280x1024 on my 17" monitor then all of the PES and WE games run super smooth locked at 60 fps. But if I set my monitor to 1024x724 and lock the refresh rate to 85 Hrtz then its considerably more stuttery and choppy. At 1280x1024 the only refresh my monnitor can handle is 60 Hrtz and if I lock the refresh to 60 Hrtz at 1024x768 then it it is smooth again. So, why do these games not like running at anything other than 60 Hrtz? I love the smoothness but after a game or two my eyes start to feel strained. Bad console port, bad programming? Or a different reason? It's been like this ever since I started playing the PC versions at I Pro Evo 3.

I have V-sync on of course and I use ATI Tray Tools to lock the refresh rates.

Thanks

Yep 60hz is the only way to remove the stuttering... either live with it or buy a TFT so you don't ruin your eyes :|

Yeah but not all monitors can handle that one. Mine can't, for example.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah good info, so it plays real nice on an lcd? Well that's good to know when I finally decide to pick one up but I'm still not convinced that they have gotten to the same level as CRT's for gaming just yet. Also the 120Hrtz option is good to know to. You must have a nice 19 or 21" to pull that off.

60HZ will ruin your eyes when u're, for instance, working in MS Word. 60HZ won't, however, ruin your eyes when playing PES5. That's because it only slows down the game, it won't change the way u see it (more flickery for example).

^Yeah thats for sure. If I set to 60Hz for my desktop, I can't take it after just a few minutes but I can handle probably a good hour or so of PES before I feel any strain.
