a lot of people have been bashing pes 2008 without much objective view point. i'd like to add my 2 cents to the discussion.
ups:
+favors attacking football. 5-4-1 that my cousin use to play will no longer cut it as it is easier to attack than defend.
+intelligent positioning/cut-ins. if you hold the ball other players will run into space. this use to never happen before, or very rarely into good positions making it more realistic.
+faster pace. I know a lot of people did not like this. however past 2-3 versions of PES has been getting slower and slower lacking any adrenaline and simply rendering counter attacking teams like arsenal useless. I think it is a real test of how good you are at dribbling and the reaction time of defenders making fools of those who simply hold down the 'chase' button, and do no 'real' defending whatsoever.
downs:
- rosters once again a let down in how up to date they are, but easily remedied through patches/option files.
- PES shop? where did it go on the PC?!
- balancing issues with the increase in speed. The increase in speed gives players a ability to abuse. This nullifies the point of Konami always trying to add skills and moves as you don't even need it nowadays.
-no 6 star difficulty again. once again ML gets a little boring with the lack of challenging AI. I average over 4 goals a game and i know i'm not the best player out there. a 7-1 beating of milan (11-1 agg.) in the champions league says a lot...
-graphics: ya... lets just say the graphics should belong on the old PS 1...
overall: 7/10
After years of 9's and 10's out of 10 as PES fans we've been a little spoiled for the immense improvements that occur every year. i get a feeling that this year's improvement is so little because they are using a completely new engine and doing a complete overhaul. The future versions of PES will most likely be based on this year's as a foundation. There's some ups and downs but overall its satisfactory game, although not stellar like we're use it. There's many other games out there that is worse and despite the disappointment i would say there are still very few footy games better than PES.
