Vieira stays at Arsenal

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/3560576.stm

Patrick Vieira will stay at Arsenal after rejecting a move to Real Madrid.
Vieira was thought to be on the brink of a £23m move to The Bernabeu, but has revealed: "The ties that I have here were too strong for me to break.

"I'm staying at the club. I'm proud to be captain of the club and I'm looking forward to achieving my ambitions."

The 28-year-old Arsenal captain's decision will provide a massive boost to Arsene Wenger's champions on the eve of the new Premiership campaign.

Vieira had looked destined for the Bernabeu, but late hitches scuppered the deal and he will now stay on at Highbury.

There was confusion about what had delayed the deal, with reports of differences over personal terms and the fee to be paid by Real.

But the deal is now dead after Vieira's decision to publicly pledge his future to Arsenal.

Wenger had given Vieira a deadline of Sunday to make up his mind about his future, and the French talisman has delivered the verdict Arsenal wanted.

"I¿ve spent the summer considering my future and a possible move to Real Madrid, but my love for Arsenal and the ties which I have here were too strong for me to break."

Real will press ahead with their proposed move for Liverpool's Michael Owen.

Madrid will poor next season without some players to shore up their defense and defensive midfield. Or maybe they're going to go for Xabi Alonso now?

How much do you believe his 'I have too many strong ties to Arsenal' rubbish? Hehe. I'd be insulted by his attitude if I were an Arsenal fan but glad to keep one of the best players in the World. Or maybe not glad to keep him because it's not really the way for club captain to behave. It's quite a kick in the teeth for the fans to think that the only reason he didn't move was because of the money. (no matter what he says)

How many of you Arsenal fans feel that he should be stripped of the captaincy, and how many feel that he maybe should be shown the door? Out of interest, like.

Yes, and no.

The statement is insulting somewhat to us supporters, we've endured this for the whole of the summer and at the last second he decides to stay... mate, if your "ties were too strong" you wouldn't even be considering an offer from Madrid.

Meh. It's certainly a huge relief though, this saga has come to an end, we can concentrate fully on the matches ahead now.

Slightly off topic but I will eat shokz' curly shits if Angulo comes to Arsenal.

Can't stop the rush...

Hip Hop is Dead
For certain people:

From the statement from Arsenal-"On a final note, we wish to state that despite any suggestions to the contrary, Real Madrid have acted properly throughout this uncertain period."

Good luck to Vieira.:)

I think the 8 years and the fact that in all that time and the interests shown by other clubs including yours, pretty much makes the "strong ties" fairly obvious. I for one am not insulted nor should i be, there was no doubt he might have wanted to leave, but the the "green grass" reality was made even more obvious by his would-be employers, some people see it as a money issue, i see it as respect (for someone they acclaimed as the best in his position), and he was getting that in abundance here. Should gerrard be stripped of his? i mean he was too scared to leave.

I am aware that he has spent 8 years at Arsenal and interest shown by other clubs has been rejected in the past. The interest shown in the past by other clubs, however, was rejected by Arsenal and not by Patrick Vieira. I feel that the interest in the past is irrelevent to his feelings now however.

Last summer I recall that there was a similar situation which came to nothing and was resolved quicker than this. You could say that Vieira could not have signed his new contract and left this summer for free. There would surely have been plenty of suitors, but he probably felt that he owed something to Arsenal to at least not to go for free, and credit to him for that.

However this latest saga does not paint him in a particuarly good light. If it were a United player, and a United captain in particular, serious doubts would be raised as to his commitment to the club, and most of the fans would probably want the captaincy handed over at the very least. Doubtless Vieira will perform to the best of his ability on the pitch, he always does, but who is to say that if Real come knocking again next summer with a better offer, if they mess up this season due to defensive frailties, he won't take the offer. You know he will if Arsenal will agree the deal. He would have this week had Real given him what he wanted.

If a player is committed to the club it does not take them until the 11th hour, when talks have stalled over wages to say that the ties he has to a club are too strong to break.

Gerrard's situation was different. It appears that he had agreed a contract and was about to sign it when he had a change of heart. Vieira just wanted more money.

I'm sure he was offered more at madrid than he is currently earning here.

And dont compare an arsenal situation with a manu one, till chelsea came on the scene, manu were offering the best wage packages to majority of their players, so dont tell me its because they just love manchester united, there was your great group of players and theres everyone else.
