Just got a new pc in the sales with a 256 mb Nvidia Geforce 6200 in it and I'm struggling to get PES 5 to run as smoothly as it did on my old 128 mb Geforce4400ti. Gonna upgrade my ram to 1024mb in the hope that it'll help.

6800 GT or non GT.

"Is the Nvidia 6800's any good > and if so which one(s) GT or the ATI cards"

GT is part of the model name. ATI is the maker of GFX card like Nvidia. 6800GT is from NVIDIA. Or you can get X800 Pro. Anyway different companies have different core frequency for the model. Anyway 6800 and x800 fall in the mid range gfx card and is about to go into the mid-low range with the new releases. Also check which version your motherboard can support, AGP or if it has got a PCI-Express slot then get the latter. The gfx card should last your son till the next new pc upgrade in the future.

150 pounds would be about 265 US dollars correct? I imagine UK prices are a bit higher than the states so I would say that the 6800GT or even 6800 non pro would both be good buys. The AGP version of the 6800 non pro only has 12 pixel pipelines but 4 additional pipes can be unlocked using riva tuner. That would be the cheaper option in the long run. It really isn't worth buying a 6600GT over the 6800 at this point. ATI's X800XL is also a decent option but it may exceed your budget.

I would imagine the 6600GT was better than the 6800, the 6800GT or x800 I think are teh best for that price range.
Try tomshardware or guru3d for better info

The 6600GT only has 8 pixel pipelines. It may have 256mb of memory and faster clock speeds but the 6800np is still superior. Right now there are few if any games that utilize even 128mb of video RAM let alone 256mb. It has been shown that if you benchmark similar cards, with the only difference being the amount of video memory, that there is little difference in performance.

But, I agree. At this point you might as well go with the 6800GT or the X800XL.

mmm im not some kind of expert on this area, but of what i`ve experienced, ATI always complained most of my requests. Actually im using a Radeon 9600xt 256MB. and it works for eg. with PES5 1280x1024 High details and it goes smooth as hell. I`ve paid this card on e-bay 135 american dollars some time ago so i think you could get it by far less than that.

My two cents :)

I will have a word with him and go with him to the store .....

ps ... I am still running with my GF4TI4200 128mb card, I couldn't play the demo of BF2 with it, but I have played CallofDuty2 Silent Hunter3 Flight sims LockOn and Pacific Fighters, PrinceofPersia(lastest)and PES5 is still playing very well .. But I will have to upgrade one of there days too ...

I'll throw in a vote for the 6800GS if you can find it. Out of the box it is almost as fast as a GT and I believe it can be relatively easily flashed to bring it up to GT levels (activate the last 4 pixel pipelines that are disabled 12->16). There is an AGP version for the GS as well.

If you don't want to get into the flashing and/or if the 6800GS is too expensive then just go with a 6600GT. Still really good bang for the buck on those cards. At this time I would go nVidia over ATI cause of the better OpenGL performance but if it's just for PES then there shouldn't be much difference(ATI generally has a slight advantage in Direct3D games). If you want to go ATI then look for one of the GTO2 cards or even the regular GTO are pretty decent. X800's and X800XL's can also be found pretty cheap too. Good luck.

i thought you meant by saying "the same price range" that both 9600xt and x850 were at the same price. Misunderstood..

cheers :$

Guys, on the subject of graphics cards, I'm looking to upgrade my poor Geforce 6200 PCI Express card, but can someone confirm from this screenshot from SiSoft Sandra that my system is x16 compatible? I've been told form PC World that it is, but.... ;)
Cheers
