OK, we'll make this the official 'Oscars Thread' and the other the offical 'Oscars Preview Thread'.

Here are my predictions and hopes:

Best Picture:
I Hope: Ray
I Predict: The Aviator

To me, this category seems like a two horse race between Million Dollar Baby (which I havent seen) and The Aviator, which is a great shame because I feel that but Sideways and Ray are better than The Aviator certainly. For me, Ray should win it for both the quality of the acting and the sheer enjoyability of the film, but I think when it comes to the night The Aviator will edge it. Sideways is a possibility but Finding Neverland a very unlikely outside IMO.

Best Director:
I Hope: Mike Leigh
I Predict: Martin Scorsese

Going back on my earlier prediction that the Best Picture and Director awards would be shared between Eastwood and Scorsese, I now think that both will go to the later, a shame as from what I've heard, Eastwood deserves it more. Personally, I would like to see Mike Leigh win it, though perhaps that's British prejudice showing through. While I thought Ray was a better film than Vera Drake, I think the directing was a much larger factor in the later, making Ray the least likely for me.

Best Actor:
I Hope: Jamie Foxx
I Predict: Jamie Foxx

Can't see this going to anyone else, and well deserved for one of the best portrayals of a real life character I have ever seen. When you compare this to the other favourites, DiCaprio's, portrayal of real life character Howard Hughes, there is no contest, Foxx being by far the more believable, so unless the academy get cold feet in going for the relative newcomer, I cant see this providing a problem. I always make a bet on what I consider to be the biggest shoe-in, and this will have my money this year.

Best Actress:
I Hope: Imelda Staunton
I Predict: Kate Winslet

Another one which seems to be pretty much a cert, and which would be well deserved. I would like to see that magnificant Staunton take it, but this isnt very likely in my opinion, and I cant see anyone but Winslet come out with it on the night. At least we have a good chance of a brit winner here.

Best Supporting Actor:
I Hope: Alan Alda
I Predict: Morgan Freeman

Probably the hardest to call of them all, I suspect Freeman will just edge it for what I have heard to be a very good performance. I would like to see Alda take it, as much as for my love of him from M*A*S*H as for his performance in The Aviator, but he seems very much the outsider. Owen is the second highest possibility in my opinion, unless of course Foxx doesnt get best actor in which case he may be gifted this. I really hope Owen doesnt take it, but I would be ecstatic to see a Foxx double.

Best Supporting Actress:
I Hope: Natalie Portman
I Predict: Cate Blancett

I was not at all impressed with Blancett in The Aviator, but I seem to be in a minority, and I expect her to win. Portman and Madsen seem to be tied in second favourite position, I hope it goes to Portman, more for the year she's had than the Closer! performance specifically, and it is a possibilty, if unlikely.

Yeah, that's the one I meant.

The BAFTA's are never a particularly good indicator of Oscar results, but from what we saw tonight gives the impression that The Aviator may not do aswell as I predict. It's a bit deceptive, as you pretty much have to discount most of the Vera Drake awards which I doubt would have gone it's way were it not a British ceremony, but the only major award The Aviator took was best picture. Atleast Foxx and Staunton won the best actor/actress BAFTA's so hopefully that's something which the academy will repeat.

PICTURE
Will win: The Aviator
Should win: M$B

DIRECTOR
Will win: M$B
Should win: The Aviator

Not because of the movie, but because of Scorcese.

ACTOR
Will win: Jamie Foxx
Should win: Jamie Foxx

ACTRESS
Will win: Hilary Swank
Should win: Kate Winslet

Head to head in their respective movies (M$B vs. ESOTSM) Swank wins it but Winslets get the edge because she also had a great performance in Finding Neverland. Plus, ESOTSM was underappreciated in the amount of nominations it got opposed to the overappreciation that M$B got.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Will win: Thomas Haden Church
Should win: Morgan Freeman

Still haven't seen Sideways but I think it'll get the nod because it's so critically acclaimed. Out of those other four, I favor Freeman.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

To my mind, ESOTSM is a dead cert for best original screenplay and Sideways a dead cert for best adapted.

Just put my bets down earlier today, here's what I went for:

£20 on Million Dollar Baby for best picture. Even though my prediction was for The Aviator, at 2/1 the return wasnt quite good enough for me, so I went for M$B at 5/2, resisting the tempatation to go for Ray at 50/1.

£10 on Clint Eastwood for best actor. 1/10 for Jamie Foxx was just rediculous, but Eastwood brings home a healthy 20/1 if he comes out on top.

£10 on Clint Eastwood for best director. Got evens on this, and I feel it a very strong possibility, if I'm gonna make up my losses anywhere it could be here.

£10 on Alan Alda for best supporting, again at 20/1 it's worth a go.

I'm gonna loose it all aren't I :(

My Predictions :D

Oscar 2005 Predictions:

Here are my predictions for the 2005 Academy Awards.
I'll only predict and detail the bigger categories but I do have some short comments about the rest.

A locked category is Best Animated Picture which will go to The Incredibles. No doubt about that.
The Screenplay categories should be locked too, with Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor's Sideways (Adapted) and Charlie Kaufman's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Original) winning. Specially because they are going to be overlooked in the other categories. Still, some say Paul Haggis' Million Dolar Baby could beat Sideways', and that John Logan's The Aviator could beat Eternal Sunshine. I really hope not.
Foreign Film will go to The Sea Inside from Spain, which almost got its star Javier Bardem nominated for best actor, and has gotten lots of awards worldwide. Shame that The Motorcycle Diaries and House of Flying Daggers didn't make it because of their countries selections, as those two would be contenders here.
Best Song I'm going with the Counting Crows and their 'Accidentally in Love' song from Shrek 2, or Josh Groban could win it for his Polar Express' 'Believe' song. Personally, I'm rooting for my home country of Uruguay and Jorge Drexler's 'Al Otro Lado del Rio' song from The Motorcycle Diaries.
Best Visual Effects will go to Spiderman 2, most of the rest of the technical awards will go to The Aviator, with The Passion of the Christ winning Best Makeup.

And then the big ones:

Best Supporting Actress:
Cate Blanchett, "The Aviator"
Laura Linney, "Kinsey"
Virginia Madsen, "Sideways" - WILL WIN
Sophie Okonedo, "Hotel Rwanda"
Natalie Portman, "Closer" - SHOULD WIN

This is a very hard category, as we the front runners have more reasons to win besides their excellent performances in the movies they're nominated for. I don't think Laura Linney and Sophie Okonedo have chances. Yes, excellent performances, but as good as the other three ladies.
From the other three, Cate Blanchett has against her that she's playing Katherine Hepburn. It's an excellent performance but I don't know if I want to her the Oscar or to Hepburn. If it's not going to Virginia, it'll go for sure to Cate.
Virginia Madsen is the comeback of the year. She's been working for years and years in B movies, and now she got an excellent part and she was amazing. She has the smallest screen time of them which could work against her but her movie is Sideways, which wont win BEst Picture, didn't have the lead Paul Giamatti nominated, and I don't think they're going to give the Oscar to their two Supporting roles (explained later) so Virginia Madsen is going to take the Oscar home.
But the one that should be taking it home is Natalie Portman. Her Closer performance was just perfect. It's her first adult role, but she was so good, had a lot of screen time, and was paired against huge talents like Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Clive Owen.

Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Alda, "The Aviator"
Thomas Haden Church, "Sideways"
Jamie Foxx, "Collateral"
Morgan Freeman, "Million Dollar Baby" - WILL WIN
Clive Owen, "Closer" - SHOULD WIN

Jamie Foxx's Collateral performance was not supporting, and Alan Alda's part was too small (even Alec Baldwin's part was better in the Aviator), so I'm counting them out. It's all between Freeman, Haden Church and Owen.
Of those three, Clive Owen had the best performance for his movie Closer. The movie was a clash of amazing talents and Owen really came on top with a very powerful performance. He's the one that should win.
The winner will be between Morgan Freeman for Million Dollar Baby and Thomas Haden Church for Sideways. Freeman is due an Oscar, but I don't think he deserves it for this movie. Yes, it's a great performance, but unlike his costars (Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood), I feel he failed to deliver the great final speech or action in the movie that would give him the Oscar. Haden Church was amazing and like his costar Virginia Madsen, he's making a comeback after years starring in soaps, and he also won most of the critic's awards, but not the Golden Globe nor the SAG award, plus he has against him that his performance is comedic as the Academy tends to go with dramatic performances. Also, I don't think both Sideway's supporting roles will be awarded, so if Virginia wins it at the start of the show, then Haden Church's chances are less, and Freeman will take it for a not perfect performance, but an excellent career.

Best Actress:
Annette Bening, "Being Julia"
Catalina Sandino Moreno, in "Maria Full of Grace"
Imelda Staunton, "Vera Drake"
Hilary Swank, "Million Dollar Baby" - SHOULD & WILL WIN
Kate Winslet, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

Though Kate Winslett was my favorite performance of the year, in my favorite movie of the year, the powerful performance delivered by Hilary Swank can't be not awarded. It's just mindblowing.
I know she really has no competition, but people are still saying Imelda Staunton has a chance, while Annette Bening's buzz has faded. Catalina Sandina Moreno should happy to be there because thet spot should've have gone to Uma Thurman, though she wouldn't have a chance against Hilary Swank either.

Best Actor:
Don Cheadle, "Hotel Rwanda"
Johnny Depp, "Finding Neverland"
Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Aviator"
Clint Eastwood, "Million Dollar Baby"
Jamie Foxx, "Ray" - SHOULD & WILL WIN

This is the most locked category, as it's all about Jamie Foxx, who continues to amaze us with excellent performances while receiving prizes like in the Golden Globes or at the Screen Actors Guild awards. It's going to be his, and nothing can stop him like that he's going to lose votes to his Collateral nomination, or that his only real threat, Clint Eastwood, is getting lots of buzz right now. None of that matters, Foxx was perfect.

Best Director:
Martin Scorsese, "The Aviator" - WILL WIN
Clint Eastwood, "Million Dollar Baby" - SHOULD WIN
Taylor Hackford, "Ray"
Alexander Payne, "Sideways"
Mike Leigh, "Vera Drake"

It's all about Scorsese once again and how come he doesn't have an Oscar when even Eminem has one. Yes, it's crazy, Martin deserves to have one, but not for the Aviator. He's had better movies, but we wont stop talking about him until he wins. And he shouldn't this year.
Alexander Payne should have a chance to win, as his Sideways was excellent with amazing performances. Hackford and Leigh have no chance.
Clint Eastwood's mighty Million Dollar Baby is powerfull, and with better performances. He deserves to win it again, but the Oscarless Scorsese will probably take this one to finally reward him for hie great career.

Best Picture:
"The Aviator"
"Finding Neverland"
"Million Dollar Baby" - SHOULD & WILL WIN
"Ray"
"Sideways"

Eternal Sunshine should win, but ok, between the actual nominated movies, Million Dollar Baby is just the perfect drama with the perfect performances and story, and deserves to win. The Aviator is the dream movie that should have been perfect but wasn't, and it was just so overhyped that it didn't live to most people's (like me) expectations.
Sideways was the Critics Choice but it's just too small to compete with the magnitud of The Aviator, and it also falls short in the acting department against Million Dollar Baby's hard hitting performances.
Ray shouldn't be here and Finding Neverland was the early favorite with legs strong enough to get it nominated though there is no buzz around it anymore.
So it should and will be Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby taking the gold, as Million Dollar Baby is the Best Picture of the Year.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I thought Aviator was a good movie but undeserving of all its praise and nominations. Scorsese shouldve won an oscar for Raging Bull or Goodfellas, so the academy will probably correct their mistakes and give it to him for this.

I feel the same way about M$B than i do with Aviator. I thought Finding Neverland, Eternal Sunshine, Ray, Hotel Rwanda and Sideways were all better than the Aviator or M$B.

Heres my predictions

PICTURE
Will win: Million Dollar Baby
Should win: Eternal Sunshine (Finding Neverland)

My actual rankings:

1) Eternal Sunshine
2) Hotal Rwanda
3) Finding Neverland

DIRECTOR
Will win: Eastwood
Should win: Scorsese

I think its 50/50 who will win. Everyone seems to think the academy will just reward Scorsese for his career rather than this movie. There's always been surprises, and Eastwood is loved by all (i also didnt think Mystic River was too special). I dont think any of the other movies were much better, so i hope Scorsese wins. They should just give him the oscar he deserved for Raging Bull. Im curious what beat him out that year, I cant think of any Great movies from that year off the top of my head.

ACTOR
Will win: Jamie Foxx
Should win: Jamie Foxx

By far this is the deepest list in the field. Even people who didnt get nominations (Jim Carrey and Paul Giamatti) mightve won with different competition. That being said, Jamie Foxx was amazing, and this was one of the performances of all time. Im not sure why people are so 'shocked' at how great an actor he is. He was excellent in Any Given Sunday and Ali.

ACTRESS
Will win: Hilary Swank
Should win: Hilary Swank

By far, the weakest group in the entire field. Swank will win by default basically, even though she had a great performance. It might just be me, but ive never really liked her too much (took part in movie that damaged Karate Kid legacy). The only thing against her is that she won an oscar recently, so they may wanna give it to someone else. Because theres no real competition, it wont really matter. I dont know what was so great about Kate Winslets performance either, Carrey stole every scene. Cate Blanchett was very annoying in the Aviator, if thats how Hepburn actually was, than she nailed it(Y)

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Will win: Thomas Haden Church
Should win: Thomas Haden Church

Hakeem, Morgan Freeman hasnt won an oscar? Really? Too bad his performance in Shawshank Redemption was up against the deepest year in oscar history (1994, look it up). Haden Church was great, but comedy roles, especially to someone who isnt prolific (unlike Nicholson in As it Good as it gets) dont get recognized. Still, someone should/has to win from sideways, and i thought he was much better than Madsen.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Did you guys know Virginia Madsen is Michael Madsen's sister? When i heard that, she went up a few notches. Im not the right person to ask for this category

ANIMATED FILM

Havent seen any. From the looks, Incredibles is the best. How is Shark Tale so bad (from what ive heard ? When i first heard about the story and the cast, i thought itd be great

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Should win: Eternal Sunshine
Will win: Aviator

Even though it makes no sense, Aviator will win. Id bet money on this (i didnt even know you could bet on oscars, where would i even do this?). Ill be here to say 'i told you so' when Aviator wins and all your jaws are dropped.

The general consensus believes that Eternal Sunshine and Sideways should win, but this is the oscars, they make some poor choices. Based on their clear hatred for Carrey (watch, in 20 years he'll finally win an oscar based on career not his current work). Sideways is more likely to win out of the two, based on the fact that Jim Carrey isnt in it, and that its also nominated for Best picture.

Adapted Screenplay
Will win: M$B
Should win: Sideways

Michael also said he'll never watch a movie where she gets naked, which makes sense, but she gets naked in almost all her movies, so i guess sideways was the first movie hes ever seen with her in it;)

Forgot to mention, why is Jamie Foxx being nominated for Collateral as a supporting actor?!??! he was clearly the star, and had more air time than anyone else (including Cruise).
