Online play- as smooth as silk!

Wow, I played a guy who's based in Germany, and the connection was absolutely amazing!! The game didn't lag/jerk/pause- once!! He hosted, then I did. I then played a guy from Spain. Again, super smooth. This was via the EA matchup server.
It felt like I was playing against the PC- it was that smooth! FIFA 2003 was always a bit too laggy for me. I always felt like I was fighting the lag, as well as my opponent, with FIFA 2003.

I have a 1Mbit cable connection.

Finally, online play without the lag! I can't wait to try direct IP later...

Hmm,

1m/b connection, of course it will run smooth on that connection.

It's 1m/b for gods sake!

Gooner, europeans are generally more and better connected to the internet than americans. Specially northern europe where you can get dsl-lines ranging from 2Mbit to 25Mbit for less than $30 a month almost everywhere.

I read in Wired magazine just recently how europeans have passed the US in both fast, cost-effective and widespread connectivity :-)

When I started playing in 1995 anything above a 28.8 Kbps-modem (i.e ISDN) was luxury. Today everyone has atleast 512-2Mbit connections.

However, the guy initiating this thread never told us where he lives. I live in sweden and I doubt I'd get much better than 100 ms playing anyone in central-europe and 100 ms isn't very good (that means I'd lag 1/10 of a second) in any kind of first person shooter-game. Maybe Fifa is fine playing with 100 ms, but I doubt it.

Well thanks for setting me straight. I guess I'm going by old stats and things I've heard from those in less well developed areas.

Wow, you're very intelligent, aren't you!
Have you ever heard of poorly implemented netcode? FIFA 2003 was notorious for it's lag-related issues, and 'out of sync' errors.

A 128k ISDN line is sufficient for online gaming actually, it doesn't necessarily follow that an increased level of connection speed will make for better gaming. Have you heard of a little thing called latency?

I could uncap my modem to about 8Mbit- but what's the point- I don't download illegal software or films. My webpages load fast enough, and my gaming is excellent.

Why are there so many ill educated, immature morons on here?
Many people are ok, but the FIFA forums tend to attract the more childish element.

Gooner, actually, I found some pretty recent statistics claiming that I'm wrong. US is not trailing europe in connectivity. Maybe it's just northern europe that's equal or more wired than the US.

Anyway, who cares :-)

My point is, we're not retarded, we HAVE access to a superb broadband-network that's better than what the usual AOL-user's using. Enough said :-)

LOL. No Prob :)

I know that Europe is catching up in this area. North America has the advantage of a large installed base of fibre optics, originally for cable TV. I believe that this was (and is?) fairly rare in Europe so these networks are being built from scratch.

Anyway, as long as you can get a good game of online Fifa going who cares :)

Not all of the USA is 'wired'- many rural areas are stuck with 56k and ISDN connections. Not just rural areas either!

You only hear about the 'good' parts of the USA- total propaganda!!

My cable/telephone/TV connection uses fibre optics- it has a digital feed. Wow, we even have hot and cold running water on this side of the Atlantic! My satellite system is digital too, and I don't even live in God's own country (the USA). Amazing!

I can't understand how does the Direct Ip work.
Yesterday me and a friend of mine were trying to play a game us two via Direct Ip Game Mode.
First, I was trying to be the host, so he inserted my name and IP, and tried to connect but we received an error message. Then we tried viceversa, and again... the same error message saying it wasn't possible to connect. Sometimes it even didn't find the other Peer. It just got stucked at 'Search for other players...'
Don't know why :(

See ya!

Oh, and I forgot to say that he has a T1 connection and I have an ADSL 512 one.... So it's not a connection speed problem... can anyone help me out?

See ya!

Well, if either of you are using a 'warez' version of the game, that might be why you can't connect. If not... are either of you using a router? If so, you might have to invoke 'port forwarding' of UDP port 2048.

machiavellian04, I agree, EA have done a superb job with the netcode.

Nearly as good as Valve/Epic with netcode :ewan:
