How do you feel when you decide to do a PhD because you realise you've done years of study that haven't prepared you for the real world, and you just want to stay in your turtle shell that is tertiary education?

Yeah, it reminds me of the Community episode when they ban Piece from the group, making everyone mean to each other since he is no longer there (and he was the scapegoat), creating an imbalance in the group.

I understood getting a PhD as someone trying to dedicate their lives to a subject that interests them and attempting to become an authority on a sub-section of that subjects' realm.

Btw, what's your PhD in, Mohammed?

I was gonna do the survey to make up for Alex being such a dick but as I play zero video games it would be of no use to you whatsoever.

Thanks for the feedback:)
It wouldn't be appropriate to disclose all of my life here but I do agree with you when it comes to holding on to a degree just for the sake of maintaining a situation or avoiding another. However, I do believe that many people also seek a tertiary education pathway as a way of maturing their ideas on a specific topic and also for (possibly) increasing their chances in order to make a living for their lives. That is my view only.

Anyway, in my case, doing a PhD was an option that I had to think about it since I had to come out of my confort zone. I am Portuguese and I decided to do a PhD in a different country (UK) and also challenge myself. So I guess the turtle shell does not suit properly my case but I sure there are cases where you could apply your idea :)
