And surprise, surprise, we got our first medal right on the first day! All thanks to Sérgio Paulinho, who got some silver on the cycling event! It is also our first ever Olympic medal in cycling.

The rest of the portuguese participation in day one was, well, a disaster. So everything else went according to plan, eh? :p

What a nice and pleasent surprise. Who would have thought that we could get a medal in cycling. Sérgio Paulinho was a hero, altough Bettini helped him alot in get distance from the peloton, i have no doubt that with another rider Paulinho would have won. Bettini is a word class athlete, very quick rider so the finish suited his style better. Im extremely proud of his performance and he really deserves that silver medal.
About the rest of the day, disapointments, disapointments and disapointments. I was watching the Maia/Brenha match and they fooled me well in that first set. I thought it was going to be easy to beat the argies but i guess i was wrong. Well in this discipline, everything isn´t lost yet. They have two ( in theory ) easy matches. This last match was against a former world champion duo.
About the rest Couto sucked he didn´t even qualify to the semi´s. He´s just a playboy, he had disciplinary probs in all the clubs he has passed (Sporting and Algés e Dafundo). I didn´t have much hopes on him. Bezugo in the gymnastics was 31º and Costa in the shooting (dunno if we translate this like that) was eliminated also. I dunno about the rest i hope you guys can report about our performances also.
Im pleased, a medal in the first day, i hope this will help and motivate our other athletes and that we have our best olympics ever results wise.
Finally, since it´s never enough PAULINHO YOU OWN, ÉS GRANDE :rockman: :rockman: :rockman:    :wootman: :bouncy:<-- first time i use a nana (H)

great surprise Paulinho's medal IMO. Couto sucked today but i wasn't excepted much from him though. Let's see our swimmers tomorrow.

I have hopes that Obikwelu and Nuno Delgado could bring us more medal.

how about Rui Silva in the 1500m? he always does good results

Obikwelu is a longshot but it's possible

Rui Silva isn´t in good shape, he is trying to "debelar uma lesão". This injury has been bugging him for a while, he still doesn´t know if he can compete or not. My biggest hopes are Obikwelu, Gustavo Lima, Delgado and João Pina. Let´s see what they can achieve. I don´t know much bout the condition of the rest of the athletes so ill abstain from making coments.

I think we're going through a crisis atm, as we have no real class athletes and the ones we have are old like Fernanda Ribeiro.

I remember people hyping Carlos Calado but we never got nothing special from him.

Diana Gomes was eliminated today in the 400m butterfly. she's only 15 years old and be in the olympics is great with that age.

our sports newspapers are just amazing :kader:

Sérgio makes history for the portuguese cycling, and the portuguese sport in general, and all he gets in Record and O Jogo is less than 1/4 of the front page! Benfica's game yesterday was much more important for our sport than the silver medal in the olympics for these newspapers! even generalist newspapers gave more importance to this new :f***:

a special word for A Bola who gave all the highlights to Sérgio's performance, and he did deserved it.

Nuno Delgado lost in the first round of the -81 kg...

Raquel Felgueiras, Tiago Venancio and the portuguese team in the 4x200 were eliminated today too in the heats.

The usual scenario...

At least we get to laugh with our athletes 'Big Book of Excuses'. Here's a couple I've heard on the past few days (feel free to add more):

- My performance was damage by the winds blowing.
Pssst, wasn't the wind blowing for everybody else too?

- My Carlos*et was disturbing my horse.
This one gets the gold medal in my book.

- My knee started hurting.
Dude, this is the OLYMPIC GAMES. Who cares if it hurts? Suck it up. You got 344 days to complain about it.

And then there's José Romão, but he fits in a category of his own.

At least we have athletes of the caliber of João Brenha and Miguel Maia. Brenha didn't play all year because of injury, and is clearly not at 100%. Did he use that as an excuse for their loss against the Argentinian pair? No, sir.

LOL you totally right :funny:

every olympic games is the same speech. at least say "we suck and be in the olympics it's already a victory". period...

and José Romão complaining about the hot temperatures in Greece (yeah because Portugal is in the north pole...) pathetic.

and that judo fighter João Neto: "i lost because i had no time to talk with my coach..." <-- and what was he doing during 4 years of preparation and trainings?, didn't he study the opponents?...

and the classic but always on fashion "the ref sucked" said by another judo fighter.

Hey, everyday brings more chapters to this story. Did anybody hear our 10m pistol guy's complaints? You got to hear to believe it! Check this out: the guy gets 97 points in his first round, which is very good, but fails miserably on the other rounds. So what's his excuse?

- I was too good on the first round, which put pressure on me on the next rounds [for trying to keep up] If I had gotten 94 or 95 points instead it would have been much better.

Another sad, saddest, disgusting aspect of our participation on these Olympics is the media coverage, especially RTP's. Has anyone noticed how they talk about our players' mediocre performances? They always use terms like 'not perfect', 'far from what was expected', 'could have been better' to describe the poor showing by our compatriotas. This seriously gets on my nerves, making me want to puke. :-puke:
Honestly, I wish they were all flogged to death.

Yeah, I'm happy for them. They're one of the few portuguese athletes in Athens I truly respect! :)

Lets hope they can do better on the next round and win that goddamn medal they deserve.
