NHL 2008 Playoff thread

Wow, no threads for NHL? I remember a few years back when the nhl threads would be so busy (havent been on soccergaming for a year though)

Besides being incredibly excited for NBA playoffs, the NHL playoffs this year are set to be fantastic imo.

Hey it can still happen.
I'm actually looking at Carolina as my outside chance. I have a feeling about them.

(((though I'm obviously "feeling it" for the habs. Especially since the similarities between this season and the 92/93 are too good to ignore. :)

I really cant wait for playoffs: San Jose? Wild? Red Wings? Penguins? Habs? Ottawa as an outside chance? It's gonna be great to watch.

I don't think Price can replicate what Roy did in 92/93 unfortunately. the Sharks and Wings are obviously up there as favourites as well, as they are every year. was reading SI at the optometrist today and they're claiming that the Rangers and Flames are ones to watch in each conference... which is weird, because I'm pretty sure both suck balls and will be out first round.

hmm, I'd have to agree with you on that one. But you never know. Who would have expected the Canes to win it all after trailing 2-0 (at home) vs. MTL?

Flames could be a dark horse. They are a "playoff team" IMO. What do you think of Penguins?

And yeah, what Roy did in 93 was incredible. But I think Price is being compared to Roy in 86, when he won it all as a rookie (they are nearly identical in that way, which further adds to my excitement :D )

Canes seem gone :S
(Ive always liked them too. Went to Raleigh 2x this summer and was surprised how much the Canes took hold there <unlike a friend of mine who told me you wouldnt have known that Anaheim had won the Stanley Cup>.
But these are just limited perceptions , I know.

West series are set:
Detroit vs. Nashville- Me smells first round upset ! :D
San Jose vs. Calgary
Minnesota vs. Colorado- very promising series IMO
Dallas vs. Anaheim

the east? Still unpredictable. I'm dying to get Boston (8-0 this season vs. them :p)

Damn Canes ruined my ******* weekend along with the Heels. I'm a bandwagoner as well, especially when the playoffs begin.

First Round
Habs (1) vs. Bruins (8) - Habs in 5. I'm being generous by giving Boston 1 win.
Pens (2) vs. Sens (7) - Pens in 6. Sens will try to tough it out without Alfredsson but in the end Malkin/Sid/Hossa will be too much.
Caps (3) vs. Flyers ( 6) - Flyers in 7. Both teams relatively inexperienced but I think the Flyers have the slight edge here. Ovechkin will try to carry the Caps but the playoffs are a different story.
Devils (4) vs. Rangers (5) - Devils in 7. Another tough match-up... I think the Rangers dominated the season series but when you have Brodeur in net during the playoffs, you're in good shape.

Wings (1) vs. Preds (8) - Wings in 6. Nashville pulled the upset if I remember correctly, but doubt that's gonna happen this year.
Sharks (2) vs. Flames (7) - Sharks in 6. Sharks are due for a breakout in the playoffs, and this might be the year.
Wild (3) vs. Avs ( 6) - Avs in 7. Wild have a great young team but I think the experience of the Avs gets them through. All that was left was to sign Ray Bourque at the deadline.
Ducks (4) vs Stars (5) - Stars in 7. Another amazing series, but something's telling me the Stars are gonna make a push this year. Having Richards doesn't hurt.

Quarter Finals
Habs (1) vs Devils (4) - Devils in 6. No Koivu, rookie in goal, and you're not going up against the Bruins. Sorry Habs.
Pens (2) vs. Flyers ( 6) - Pens in 6. Classic Pennsylvania rivalry, but the Flyers aren't ready for it just yet. They'll put up a good fight due to the rivalry, but it won't be enough.

Wings (1) vs. Stars (5) - Stars in 6. Again, something's telling me the Stars are pushing for it this year. Turco to outplay Osgoode/Hasek to send the Stars through.
Sharks (2) vs. Avs ( 6) - Sharks in 7. Just too strong against an experienced but aging Avs side. Should be a hard-fought series though.

Conference Finals
Pens (2) vs. Devils ( 6) - Pens in 6. Their PP and firepower should be too much even for Brodeur. Lack of attacking support for NJ doesn't really help.

Sharks (2) vs. Stars (5) - Sharks in 7. What a series this would be. Honestly it was a coin toss for me but the Sharks look the goods this year.

Finals
Pens (EAST) vs. Sharks (WEST) - Sharks in 6. Experience normally pays off. Thornton/Marleau/Nabakov/Campbell to lead the Sharks to glory. Pittsburgh's goaltending situation is iffy, and their amazing attacking power won't be enough to help. Sharks = Champions.

As long as I get Wings-Avs in the playoffs, I'll be satisfied.....

I just have to add this.........

If you are looking for a definition of the word "awkward", look no further than the locker room/player interviews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, at the end of the season when the team has missed the playoffs. Everybody is saying how much they love playing here, but just seem to be throwing in a VERY slight sense of disapointment at not reaching the playoffs. Oh, and you'll pretty much get the same reaction from management.....

Duh. let's face it, Toronto's a hockey city. doesn't matter how bad we become, Peddie's always gonna keep this team mediocre and making the fans believe they have a small shot at the playoffs, so they keep raking in the dough. the players, well they do love playing for the Leafs, honestly who wouldn't, arguably the biggest fanbase in the NHL despite 3 straight years of playoff-less hockey. it's time for a revamp but management isn't ready to rebuild because they're afraid that the short time span where we're dwelling at the bottom of the league (funny, we were close this year anyways?) will cost the franchise financially. bleh, sucks being a Leaf fan eh?

I've had enough of Brodeur over the years....I hope the Rangers win hold on and win. Rangers-Canadiens would be a gem...

I think I'll be rooting for Canadiens this time. Great team with a great history, and I would really love for Koivu to lift the Stanley Cup in June.
