PES6 does, to me, appear to be more of a simple port over from the PS2 version.
What prevents it from being a direct port are the fact that the graphical engine clearly has been polished somehwat. And, the game doesn't seem to have that quick feeling that the PS2 footage gives me. I'll welcome that purely because I feel they've went too pace-orientated in PES6 on the PS2.
It's not really their first proper attempt at a next-gen title, really. Konami like to port things over and, in a weird way, give the players more of a level playing field.
Aestetically, PES6 strikes me more as something similar to the ISS Games. Players seem leaner.
As for FIFA, they give it a new coat of paint every year but never seem to tinker with engine of the game enough to warrant purchase.
FIFA 07 - Skill Moves
All very well and good but, it's not like they're difficult to pull off and, they're just addons.
FIFA 07 Gameplay
Very quick. Slow, methodical build-up can be completely bypassed by a quick dart down the wing. Just as Konami rarely improve the look of their game, EA rarely change the feel of theirs. They also seem to have weird shades of green on their pitches. Making them look, well, dusty. And, whilst we're nitpicking, they've taken the presentation of the games to a weird cinematic hell that looks nothing like the TV coverage they're trying to replicate.
Finally, a comparison:
FIFA vs. PES
I can't apologise enough for the soundtrack. Admittedly, it doesn't give much of PES but it does show you that it can indeed go into a fair bit of detail. Also, the players seem far less generic. Admittedly (this may just be the perspective of the footage) they all have skinny legs now. And, I don't see whether they've finally given the keepers the ability to stretch for efforts and save one-handed.
FIFA do indeed have the upper hand in terms of animation. I often wonder how much motion capture Konami does. As good as the animations are in PES, they've left out some emissions when it comes to goalkeepers. Some of them being absolutely fatal (set peices, definitely). Luckily, one of the major bugs in PES (The tee-up freekick from 40 yards) can be avoided simply by avoiding the thing that triggers it. Some of the glitches I've seen in FIFA's recent history just seems unforgivable. Balls going through keepers hands, heads, etc...
Not that PES is without clipping errors. Got a problem with a defender, kick through his face. I do regard the AI in PES to be a bit more flexible and individual, though. Just yesterday, I had a Mavuba shot from 20 yards that, weirdly went along the ground and found the net. Upon closer inspection, Lucas Neill looked as if he was going to boot it, but he got air, instead. Freidel appeared to be relying on Neill to clear up, so the shot beats him.
So, some goals are weird, but they have a logic to them. Including the oh so common "I didn't want to headbutt the post" excuse.
All in all, I prefer PES. It treats the match itself as the main draw. Not the players individual abilities. And each match seems different with a different goal winning each time. It amazes me to think what EA have abandoned over the years.
Proper physics engine to the nets (Nitpicking, again)
1-99 abilities.
The latter of which would give the players so much individuality. I can only assume EA abandoned this to cut down on the size of the player database. When you consider PES's database has a fraction of the players, it seems to offer so much more.
