New positions...

Ok obviously i've not had the game as long as you guys so this thread PROBABLY would have been better in like October, but how much do we think the new positions tab actually helps?

what i mean is, if a player is competent in one position, what penalties do they induce to a player who is natural? Is it tiredness? technical ability? overall performance?

anyone think they have the answer? Personally i reckon that if SI have been realistic then it's only the positionining attributes that change a great deal. Or maybe the attributes dont change at all?

For the sake of examples, lets all use Gerrard. Gerrard is natural in MC and accomplished at MR. Take this as the example and lets hear what everyone thinks are the disadvantages?

well...e.g.-player X is natural MC, accomplished AMC and has other positions but only competent or awkward..i will only start him in MC or AMC, i don't really care about the other ones, unless it is strictly necessary given the conditions of the game(for instance if someone gets injured)...
anyways i there isn't much difference between natural and accomplished

no neither do i, ive played Gerrard (and others) in similar positions, and i dont appear to see any drop in performance. However, what do we actually think the drop in performance is caused by?

Realistically it would hurt every skill the player has, slowing his acting speed, because of a lower confidence in himself. In the game... no solid idea.

There are things that do affect the game but we have little knowledge on how this happens, such as this.

I think it has more to do with player stats, if the player has good crossing and speed and crappy tackling and marking, he will do better as a winger than full back , even tho he is a natural full back.

But i'm not sure how this affects things.

A players potential is only filled if he is played consistantly in his natural position. If you play, say, Steven Gerrard, in DR, you will notice over time (half a season or so) his stats change accordingly. Let's say at the start of the season he has 195 current ability, filling his potential. (making this up here, I'm assuming its still out of 200) By the end he will have dropped to say, 190, and the most noticeable changes will be in things like Finishing, which he doesn't exercise on a regular basis.

What I'm saying is it affects the statistics in that a player natural in a certain position has stats that reflect it - a midfielder has good composure, passing, technique etc. This are adversely affected if you play him in an awkward role, as he doesn't utilise his core skills, and as a result, his ability drops below his potential.

My theory anyway :$ I'll have to try and prove it.

good post Dave, is there any truth to what you post or is it all hypothetical? out of interest.

It's 90% hypothetical, based on a couple of observations I made playing Alonso and Sissoko in positions that aren't natural to them.

It's always been the same, btw, the new screen is just a graphical showing of what was already there, hidden in the database. They just separated different positions more, so it would be more logical.

Dave's theory makes sense, but I'd like to think the player is instantly worse on the position he doesn't like as much also, besides degrading over time if he doesn't adapt to the position.

I think a player's performances will be instantly affected, but stats/fulfilling potential will be gradually affected.

Day off for me today so I'm off to investivate :D

yeah, investivate that for us:p

well, i'm with dave too...although it must have to do with training to..?i mean team training..
