Founded in 1996. No trophies. However they've been to two MLS Cup finals (2002, 2005). Up until the Nicol era they were one of the sh*te-est teams in MLS. They've been pretty good since then.
The coach is Steve Nicol, former Liverpool player. One of the best coaches in MLS over the last five seasons. Paul Mariner, former England international, is his assitant coach. For three years in a row now, the Revs have had the smallest payroll of any team in MLS. Instead of going after established, high-salary players, Nicol has built a team of young talented American players who came up through the collegiate system.
The average Revs home game draws 12,000 or so. One of the more vocal crowds (by MLS standards).
Star players:
Taylor Twellman (ST) - has been the most consistent scorer in MLS over the past five seasons. Quite surprising, considering his lack of size, speed and technical ability. Fearless, hardworking player. A real predator in the box. Despite not being very tall, he's a big threat in the air. US international.
Pat Noonan (F/M) - one of the more technically gifted players in MLS; can play up top or as a wide midfielder; very good with the ball at his feet but not particularly fast. US international.
Clint Dempsey (M/F) - the only American player to score in the 2006 World Cup. One of the most skillful and creative players in MLS. A real goal-scoring threat from midfield.
Shalrie Joseph (M) - by far the best defensive midfielder in MLS. Think Patrick Viera. The only reason Shalrie isn't a US international is that he's cap-tied to Grenada.
Rising star: Andy Dorman (M)- young Welsh player who played collegiately in the US; fast, great crosser of the ball, solid finisher; currently having a breakout season in MLS
2006 outlook: Like Bobby said, DC United are running away with the Eastern Conference at the moment. But all that matters in MLS are the play-offs. The Revs are among the top two teams in the East and among the top four teams in the league, so they definitely have a shot.
