My oh my what a game!!
Well, just played 4 more matches... I set up a small tournament consisting of England and the five other WC Qualifying teams in their region. Wales, Austria, Poland, etc. etc.
I had played the first half of the matches last night and had suffered nary a loss, but one draw. All the games were good save the game against Libya (who I substituted for Azjerbaijan or whatever since that team is not in my game) which as previously reprted was an easy 3-0 (should've been 5 or 6 I had thought the way I dominated..missed a few easy chances)
Anyway, I drew the first two games of the second legs 0-0, and 0-0 against AUstria and Poland respectively. Lively games but some great goalkeeping both ways prevented any scoring. With Poland hot on my heels in the group I next faced N.Ireland, who I had previously beaten 2-0 in the first leg. This match was one of the best to date that I've had.
I started strong with good pressure after revamping my England lineup. With no goals in the previous two matches I started Peter Crouch up front with Jermain Defoe, Owen has been dismal and was dropped, Rooney started on the bench, Owen Hargreaves first start at CDM of the turnament was the other notable change.
N.Ireland almost smoked one in midway through the first half when a quick one two hit a man open from a good distance outside the box, he one-timed and it skipped by Robinson, who was saved by the post and John Terry's clearing.
Then Crouch and Defoe got to work with some give and go's, involving Lampard as well. Wrights-Phillips skipped past a defender near half and punched it ahead to Crouch, who held the ball up and then tried a long through ball that looked hopeless at first but somehow skipped though to Jermain Defoe who was closely marked as he sped into the box. While running disagonally Defoe tried to smash one back against the grain under the defenders heavy duress but instead was dragged down for a penalty!
Frank Lampard calmly slotted home Englands first goal in three matches. In full control it looked like England would double their lead but Crouch's header cracked off the woodwork a minute or so later.
N.Ireland then responded just before the half with a superb maneuver that saw a forward free in the box...his blast was blocked by Robinsons fingertips but it sprung into the air between Terry and Ferdinand and was surprisingly headed home by a lurking Healy, as Robinson was still on the deck from the first blast.
With the score equalized the second half was a tight affair with few chances either way. As England substitutes Wayne Rooney and David Beckham warmed up to come on, it was Crouch and Defoe at it again. Some short passing finally found Crouch on the edge of the box and he skipped in then tried a quick cross, hoping to square it for Defoe at the far post when the N.Ireland keeper pounced and punched the ball back out desperately...what happened next was pure magic....INSERT ATTACHED REPLAY
