My Soccer Career in Australia

Well, I use to live in Malaysia, and I was among the best of the kids who are my age...Then, last year, I moved to Australia and joined my school team...I immediately noticed how talented kids were here...Well I got put in the B team, and there I played as a right-back, and I played pretty well...A few clearances, even a few runs and crosses into the enemy's penalty box...But no goals...But I'm a defender anyway...

Well this year the soccer doesn't start till Term 2 (May), and I am hoping to get to the A team, but my chances look slim!!

well as long as you keep trying and impress the coaching with not only skill but determination, you should find yourself in the A squad.

Definitely. Show the coaches you have determination and you will be picked. Just look at players like (sorry to show my bias) Andy Johnson or Aki Riihilahti. Especially in Aki's case, he's not exactly the most skilled player, but he shows so much heart and determination that he always gets picked for Finland (and Palace). I don't have to tell you about AJ.

Don't stop running in the tryouts. Even if everyone else is walking, jog slowly. Show the coaches that you are only there for one thing: to play, and play hard. You will get picked if you show that you're more committed than the other (presumably more skilled) players.

I know this is a stupid example, but in one of the leagues i referee, it's a Girls U19 indoor division. There are players mostly aged 14-16, with a few 13, 17, and 18. On one of the teams is a 10 year old girl (yes, TEN!). She is definitely not at the same skill level as the other players, but she is scrappy as hell and never stops running. She goes after every ball, even if it seems obvious that she won't win it. She tracks back and plays on both sides of the pitch, pretty much just going after every free ball no matter where it is.

Her team puts her up front as the lone striker now because all they have to do is play a long ball in, and she will win it, no matter where the defender (or defenders) are. Once she learns how to pass more effectively (she tends to get tunnel vision for the goal, which is all well because she gets a lot of shots on goal), she could be a great player.

But my point is, at 10 years old she's playing in a U19 division as her team's lone striker, because she shows 100 times more commitment than everyone else on the field.

So yeah, just show the coaches that you are determined, and you will impress.

Thanks guys....I play soccer at lunch-time everyday at school with my friends, and I am getting to the stage where I can actually kick the ball up into the air consistently...And i have been shooting alot lately, some of them actual goals...

I just need to practice before the team trials in April...Thanks guys...

Good luck with tryouts, but as said previously, try your hardest, you may not have the highest amount of skill at the tryout, but if the coach see's your determination, he may put ya on the roster.

Dude lucky you left to australia man. If you'd stayed here i guess you wouldnt have gone futher than the local "taman" team. All the best & hope you fulfill your potential :D

have you tried signing up to a local team? if there's one thing we've got here it's parks with teams open to everybody on every corner.... you're best bet is to go join one of those... perhaps with some friends or something

Thanks again guys!! Tryouts coming in about 6-7 weeks, so I'm practicing really hard...

My only real problem is dribbling...I know how to dribble, but I never actually try, coz I haven't done it before, but I need to try it, and if the dribbling works, my confidence will really go up...

Well, I can't join a local soccer club because they're really competitive and only want the best players...The only clubs tha did say yes to me were too far away, like 20km away from home...

What I found is that skill level varies from location. Even if the location is 1 school away (let alone 1 country).

Example: I went to an all boy school here in Toronto and I couldn't even make the team it was horribale. Then I transfered schools and am not only on the team but most likley starting and the irony in that is the team I play for now has gone further then my old school in the latest tournament.

I love soccer and hope to have a semi-pro career if anything.

Where abouts do you live mixed_boy? There are quite a few club's here, and even though they are pretty far away it shouldn't be to much of a prob. Metros are only about 10ks away from me, thats a 15min drive maybe, and I even got into the team at Adelaide Croatia Raiders, though that was a 30min drive so that didn't last long (2 weeks to be exact :crazyboy: ). Also, how old are you? Maybe I'll play you this year. :rockman:
