Mourinho threats of terror
High profile manager Jose Mourinho says he received death threats from a notorious Portuguese underworld figure over his move to Chelsea from FC Porto.

Mourinho stated that he lived "dramatic weeks of terror" as he feared for his life and the safety of his family.

In an updated edition of his autobiography to be published in Portugal this weekend, Mourinho said he received the telephone threat on the eve of Porto's Champions League final against Monaco played in Gelsenkirchen, Germany in May.

Porto won 3-0 and the following month Mourinho, as widely expected, signed for English Premier League heavyweights; Chelsea.

In excerpts from the book published by weekly news magazine Sabado, Mourinho said he was at the team hotel when a club official, former boxer Reinaldo Teles, came to his room and said he had received urgent messages for Mourinho on his mobile phone.

The coach had blocked phone calls to his room and only his wife had his mobile phone number.

Mourinho said he called one of the numbers and a man told him, "We're not going to do anything now because you've got a final tomorrow, but when it's over you're a dead man because we're going to get you."

Mourinho did not name the person, but said Portuguese police told the club he was a Porto gangster with a criminal record and recommended additional security measures.

Porto police were not available for comment.

Mourinho had revealed in June he received "serious threats", which he described as "bravely not anonymous" but at the time he did not describe them as death threats.

After the final, Mourinho conspicuously stayed away from the celebrating Porto players, preferring to stay on the sidelines with his wife and two children.

Mourinho said in the book that club officials brought his family down to the pitch from the bleachers because of the threats.

He said he wanted to leave the Gelsenkirchen stadium before the trophy and medals were awarded, but his wife persuaded him to stay.

When the team arrived back in Porto the day after the final and toured the city centre in an open-topped bus, Mourinho was nowhere to be seen.

He said in the book that friends in Porto had organised for private cars to meet him on the runway at Porto airport and whisked him and his family to safety.

"For the first time in my life, I was forced to hire bodyguards," Mourinho said.

An English version of the autobiography, "Jose Mourinho: A Cycle of Victories", is planned for release later this year.
