The most important match for IFK Göteborg was probably the UEFA Cup quarter-final against Valencia in 1982. IFK Göteborg had no money, so they had to borrow money to be able to travel to Valencia. They managed to get a 2-2 draw, IFK then won 2-0 at home in front of 50,000 people and eventually went on to win the UEFA Cup. Later that year IFK won the Swedish championship aswell as the Swedish Cup.

This was the beginning of the most successful era of IFK Göteborg, when they shocked the major European clubs time after time.

After the 1982 UEFA Cup victory, IFK Göteborg...
  • ... reached the quarterfinal of the European Cup in 1985
  • ... reached the semifinal of the European Cup in 1986
  • ... won the UEFA Cup once again in 1987
Not bad for a club which was practically bankrupt a few years earlier!

1986 UEFA Champions League Final agains Barcelona, if Steaua would not have won that game than Romania would be considered one of those countries with talent but that cant win anything and thats the worst thing to be.
