Serie A attendances fall again despite World Cup win

MILAN, Oct 25 (Reuters) -- Fans are turning their backs on Italy's Serie A, despite the country's World Cup success, with average attendances this season slumping to 19,511, the ninth successive season that crowds have fallen.

A study by Gazzetta dello Sport showed that average attendances have fallen by 11,650 from the 1997-98 season when the figure was 31,161.

This season's drop, which comes after Italy beat France to win the World Cup in July, can be partially explained by the demotion of the country's most successful club Juventus to the second division Serie B.

Juve were stripped of their last two league titles and relegated to Serie B by a sports tribunal looking into allegations of match-fixing.

The Turin club's first ever season in the second tier has resulted in a large rise in attendances in Serie B - crowds are up 20.3 per cent on last season's figures.

While Juve's relegation can explain some of this season's drop in attendances in Serie A, Gazzetta said the negative trend over the past decade was due to other factors including crowd violence, expensive ticket prices, the impact of the match-fixing scandal, saturated television coverage and poor quality stadiums.

The newspaper said that there was no sign of a similar fall in crowds in other major European leagues with attendances actually increasing in Spain and England.

The fall in top flight crowds may also reflect the change in status of a number of clubs - big city teams Genoa, Napoli, Verona and Bologna are all in Serie B while the top flight has several teams with a much smaller fan base.

Empoli had an average crowds of 6,725 last season, Chievo Verona 8,589 and Siena 9,874
Doesnt the MLS have about 20k fans in their stadiums?

Bit specious to suggest that attendances in England are rising on the whole.

The average is up, because ManUre have added another tier to their monolithic nose-bleed factory, whilst the Arse have a new ground - so the overall figure has effectively shot up.

I would argue for every new seat Manchester United install, about 2 seats is lost at the other end of the table.

As for Italy, *meh* fans are a lot passive when it comes to going to the games. But attendances can really mean Carlos-**** if you have a large tv/sponsorship deal (in the case of Juve and their pitiful crowds for example.) A deal sadly no investor outside Europe would probably pay.

That's quite sad, the average of the Serie A is at the level of the second divisions in England and Germany.

Some USL (USA 2nd div) teams do better than some Serie A teams. I'm not making that up. If Julian still posts on here he can comfirm this first hand, as can Rhino.

Montreal - 11,554 (Sell out)
Rochester - 10,065

Not only that, but a 4th division team (Des Moines, 4,112) nearly manged to equal one. The US 4th division (PDL) isn't professional.

If Montreal had a bigger ground they'd have a bigger number. They currently play at a rundown stadium with a running track.

The fact that a USL team (and if you know anything about the USL, you'll know why) can beat a Serie A team in attendance is sad.

The title of this thread is a bit odd, since Serie A still has millions of fans and TV coverage around the world. But yeah, it's sad the stadiums are almost empty... maybe if Italy gets EURO 2012 they will build new stadiums, or renovate to make it more attractive for the fans to come and pay for expensive tickets. SKY Italia subscriptions with full Serie A coverage are much more attractive now then to pay alot for a sh*t view every week. Hopefully it will slowly recover...

The numbers for Montreal are correct and if they had a bigger stadium they could get a bit more in it.

It's clear that not having Juve in Serie A you see the interest people show about it. Just look at the top scorers. Almost all Serie B quality. I'm forced to watch Serie B and I can say that I enjoy it. It as good quality with teams like Juve, Napoli, Bologna, Genoa...

I should add that even without Juve in Serie A there's still some very bad calls. Hell, it's even worse than before. Just now I'm watching Palermo-Messina and the ref gave a pk to Palermo and the foul was clearely outside the box and Messina scored a legit goal but the ref whistled the offide.

Anyway, they should lower the prices and make the stadiums safer for the families that go there.

Not to mention that if you watch an EPL game on TV and you watch a Serie A game right after, you'll probably want to vomit in terms of image quality. It's terrible in comparison.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Ha.

That's funny. Way more people around the world watch the Serie A than MLS. Just because the fans of the actual country don't attend the games doesn't mean it isn't popular. I've never been to a hockey game or lacrosse game in my life along with a lot of my friends by we all watch a lot of them on TV.

how spoiled does a fan have to be, not to see all these top stars play live? :kader:
anyway, of course the mls isnt more famous, but in its own country it seems more popular...
too bad

In the NFL when the stadium doesn't sell out fans in that city can't watch the game on TV. Maybe Serie A should look into that.

I don't think its just Italy , Wigan only got 20,000 in 25,000 stadium against Man Utd, attendances have been falling every year apart from this year( due to Man utd and Arsenal increasing capacity).

Wigan is a small town with 2 big time sports teams, alot of the people there already support United or Liverpool anyway.

Boro v Newcastle game wasn't on the box, but that really didn't stop me from going to the pub and paying nothing to watch it on Al-Jazeera sport.

I think if you weigh up the cost, the pub is the best option for a man crippled in debt like myself. I think Italians are fairly intelligent when it comes to the desicion of paying nothing to watch something than paying over the odds to do the exact opposite.
