MLS expanding in 2005 to ........

Hmmm this is very interesting. Cleveland isn't really a soccer friendly city. I was up there this summer for the Celtic-Boca match and hardly anyone was there. I hope this works out for the best and creates a lovely Ohio Derby. Also, Oklahoma trying to get a MLS franchise? What happened to Rochester. I'd love to have them in the MLS.

Yeah, I am suprised that Rochester isn't coming into the league before Cleveland or Oklahoma City. Maybe the plan is to have the Cleveland team and San Diego join in '05, with Oklahoma City and Rochester soon after. Damn, I really hope they don't call that team Chivas USA.

Cleveland getting an MLS idea is a bad idea. This team is a disaster waiting to happen. They got 17,000 people for Celtic/Boca which by far was the lowest for all of the ChampionsWorld games. There is a team nearby in Columbus as well. I think the MLS should be putting teams in areas that don't have teams, not areas where another team is nearby. I don't think this team will do well.

So Cleveland and San Diego joins our football family. And I've a beef with each:

Cleveland. Cleveland? That city has no prior football heritage, the Celtic-Boca Juniors friendly did poor at the box office, and Ohio already has a MLS club.

San Diego. That would give California 3 MLS clubs. Thats 25% of the league in one state. And get this, the club is going to be called Chivas USA. How imaginitive. Just call them San Diego Goats (goats=chivas).

why MLS don't create 2 or 3 leagues with promotion and relegation system? it's more funny and more cities could join the competition...

crap, now I have to wait even longer for Rochester to be an MLS team. We deserve it way more than Cleveland. We have all the credentials. Fans, we are called Soccertown, USA for a reason. Stadium, It's suppose to be finished by next year. The talent, Been champions or finalist in every year of existence including being the only non-top division team to win the US Open Cup. There still has been no further news about Rochester joining in 2004 which I don't see happening. The final decision is suppose to be made on Nov. 30.

i can understand why MLS fans would not want a team called Chivas USA...but why not San Diego Chivas?

San Diego Padres, New Mexico Lobos....it wouldnt be the only team with a team name in Spanish.

To all those citing the bad attendance of Celtic - Boca as a reason why Cleveland shouldnt get an MLS team should shut the hell up. If you took the time to take your head out your ass, then you would realize that there was a reason for such a low attendance to that game. Reason #1 - AC Milan cancelled. The promoters offered refunds to those that bought the tickets. They then got Boca to play and the people who still had their tickets were able to attend. Meaning - lowered attendance
Reason #2 - Nobody gives a **** about Boca. They did nnot win Champions League.

Then there are those of you who say that Cleveland is too close to Columbus. Then you contradict yourself by saying a place like Rochester should get a team or Philadelphia. Well guess what? Those places are just as close to New York and D.C. as Columbus is to Cleveland. Then for whatever reason, people seem to forget that a very rich committed man is purchasing this team in Cleveland. That means that he wont dump his team at the first sign of financial trouble. It also means, YOU GUESSED IT! A SOCCER SPECIFIC STADIUM.

No matter how you feel, this is a good thing

this is true. a lot of people were a bit disappointed and turned off after ac milan cancelled. i know the mls really wants an inter-state rivalry. that's why you hear so much about san diego and houston being brought up. i don't think cleveland is really that bad. sure it sounds less enticing as, say san diego or houston or atlanta.

i have no problems with a team in cleveland. as long as the people running the team are committed and willing to endure a little bit of hardship.

Here's a question for you? How much exactly is the owner of your team worth? You know, $$$. Yeah, how much?

Should we blame Boca for not being in Europe or should we blame the public for not knowing squat?

That was a rhetorical question by the way.

He probably doesn't have as much money as the new owner for cleveland, but you can't buy fans. We have a major fanbase just in the Rochester area. If we go to the MLS we'll get people from all over New York, maybe even Canada.

Nice effect, but the question deserves answer. And by goneit, im gonna answer it. Who said that we should blame Boca? My point was Boca was not as big a club as Milan. That isnt even an arguable point.

Next, If a team cancels and the promoters offer a refund for tickets, what the hell is the public supposed to think? They think the game is off. They then get Boca to fill in.(saying short notice wouldnt do it justice) Should the public now run back to the ticket offices for a FAR inferior team? Get real.
