(Guys, I put this here so it would get attention, but we can add this to the MLS thread if that's what's supposed to happen.)
A few weeks ago a friend of mine told me he read this (under here) at Terra.com. Then Jorge Ramos talked about it briefly on his show.
And now I read it on a canadians fan site:
THIS article:
" TCS: SuperLiga a starting point
Unless Heidi Klum has just walked by me I generally like to look forward, but we need to take a second and look back at a major announcement that was lost in the shuffle of Beckhamania over the weekend.
It's called SuperLiga, and it is the future of Major League Soccer.
OK, a little dramatic, but also true.
In case you were too busy running out and buying up Galaxy jerseys with number 23 on them, MLS announced late last week a new tournament featuring four teams from MLS and four from south of the 2-0 border.
First off is a group stage with two teams from each country, then a knockout format until a champion is crowned. From MLS are the Hoops, Houston, D.C. United and the Galaxy. From the bad guys are the Chivas mothership, America, Pachuca and Morelia.
Winner gets a million bucks, although there is an individual prize for any player who finds the neck of America's Cuauhtémoc Blanco. Or two-foots him.
Fans in Chicago and Colorado will get a taste as well, as both Toyota Park and Dick's Sporting Goods Park will host games between Mexican sides.
The whole thing runs from late July through August, and we can watch it on Univision and my guess is with Beckhamania now in the mix, an English-language television partner will pop up before too long.
Beckham and the Galaxy against Chivas at The Home Depot Center? Think that environment may be a little electric?
So here's why your old pal Tino is en fuego about this thing - because one day, sometime, MLS and Mexican teams will compete against each other in a full-on combined league. Gonna happen, kids.
The tea leaves say MLS is headed in the right direction to make the product better on the field. Big dough from TV partners, new stadiums, the "Beckham Rule," youth development - it all adds up.
And at some point with that kind of new growth and stability, the upside will be too strong for MLS and the Mexican league not to join forces.
I'm not smart enough to know how it's going to happen, but it says here it does.
And this is the first step. SuperLiga is going to be fantastic - and my guess is just a taste of things to come one day down the road."
All I have to say is: This would be beyond awesome. It would lift North American soccer to a super league that would rival the best in the world. (A Canadian, Mexican and American league?)
----------- but is it possible? Or is it just an idea?
I mean: What about the 2nd division Mexican sides???? What about all the new clubs joining the MLS. We cant just have a 40 team league can we???(unless we do it like the NBA/NHL does with conference games and then playoffs.)
But it's alot to take in, though the money would be incredible for all the teams/leagues involved.
This is pretty interesting and huge if it were to happen..............but I still cant see it in the near future. (if ever for various reasons above <1 other being that the MExican league is doing great already, why change it?).
