Merk To Referee Final

German referee Markus Merk will referee the Euro 2004 final in Lisbon on Sunday.
The 42-year-old has officiated in England’s 2-1 defeat against France and the 2-2 draw between Sweden and Denmark.

Sweden’s Anders Frisk will take charge of Wednesday’s semi-final between hosts Portugal and Holland.

And Italian Pierluigi Collina be the man in the middle for Thursday’s semi-final between Greece and the Czech Republic.

Merk's been good so far (France vs. England for example).


He was awful in the Porto vs. Depor match but you gotta admit that this game was full of diving cheats.

Merk's not the one to steal the show, he rather lets the players play when he's insecure on what to call.

that's actually a really good attribute for someone to referee a big final.

I think he means when refs make big calls (controversial red cards/penalty kicks), so they can get some attention. These are the worst refs there are, and can ruin a everything. These refs usually turn up at the WC tho.

I couldn't belieeeeeeve this when i read it. Collina surely gets the nod over the other two hands down. The best ref and the most respected ref in the world and they don't use him to referee a championship final. Craaaazy!

Yeah I agree Collina is the man for finals. In my opinion he is the most fair (I dont mean pretty), and plus he looks kind of scary and I think that keeps the players in check. Also, isnt he going to retire soon?? I thought he would retire before the next euro cup, so let him have this one!!
