I love them. Finding a good cover to a song you like is like finding gold, not to mention that covers allow me to listen to those fucking catchy Miley Cyrus/One Direction songs I wouldn't be able to listen to otherwise. A good mashup of wo songs you like is also excellent, although quite rare.
BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge has a bunch of good covers. I'll post a few later. Anyone know a good cover/mash-up?
Warning #1: Do not post those shitty club music remixes of songs. They're shit and a remix is not a mashup. A mashup should be a seamless (or close to if the idea itself is great but the execution is not so good) blend of two songs.
Warning #2: Not everyone gets what a proper cover is. Allow me to illustrate. Here is Blurred Lines by Thicke ft. Pharrell:
It's catchy, it has a good rhythm, and it is precisely the type of song that makes for a good cover. Here is Vampire Weekend (a hipster band I actually like) doing a shitty cover of it:
Why is it shit? Because they haven't actually changed anything. It's just them singing the song the exact same way with only the slightest changes. I would get a more varied performance at a Thicke concert for fuck's sake. The beauty of a cover lies in one musician taking another's work and filtering it through their own sound to make something different. Here are Queens of the Stone Age doing it properly:
Note that I'm not a big fan of how that came out. They went a whole different style which I'm not a fan of, but at least they made it totally different.
So, please, if you post a cover, don't post someone doing the song the same way. If I see you posting a vid of a song I like, when I click it I want to be blown away by how uniquely different it sounds, not the same music with slightly different vocals.
