Benitez agrees terms for Figo
Jul 7 2005
EXCLUSIVE by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have agreed terms with Portuguese superstar Luis Figo - but the deal is on ice because Real Madrid have suddenly demanded a £2m transfer fee.

Figo secured a verbal agreement with the Spanish giants saying he could leave on a free if he found the right club.

But having concluded negotiations with the Reds, the 32-year-old midfielder is now livid with Real's u-turn. They now want a fee for his services.

Liverpool won't proceed with the transfer if they have to pay the Spanish club.

As the Figo deal faces deadlock, Benitez is edging closer to securing the services of Southampton's Peter Crouch and Valencia's Mohammed Sissoko.

No fee has been agreed with the Saints, but it now seems only a matter of time before the young striker moves to Anfield in a deal worth around £6.5m.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe is at loggerheads with his player and manager over the negotiations.

Redknapp is realistic about the situation, recognising Crouch has his heart set on the move. The St Mary's boss wants to get on with rebuilding his side with the kitty he'll get.

Lowe, however, continues to increase his valuation of the recently capped international, which has led to the stalemate.

However, Anfield sources say there could be progress on a Crouch deal over the next 24 hours.

In a frantic week off the park, Djimi Traore and Didi Hamann have today penned the deals agreed in the aftermath of the European Cup win.

And goalkeeper Pepe Reina is now free to make his debut at Wrexham on Saturday after receiving international clearance.

Liverpool are also making progress with negotiations regarding Jamie Carragher's future and expect the defender to sign his four-year-contract with skipper Steven Gerrard tomorrow.

"We're delighted to have secured Steven, Djimi and Didi, and now the future of Jamie is at the top of our minds," said chief executive Rick Parry today.

"We're very hopeful this will be sorted out very quickly."

Carragher, Gerrard and Traore will stay at the club until at least 2009, while Hamann has signed a one-year-deal.

Liverpool striker Milan Baros has intimated that he is happy to continue his career at Anfield.

Both Lyon and Valencia attempted to sign Baros this summer, but neither move materialised.

Baros is now calm about his future and insists that every major club needs four strikers and that he is ready to fight the likes of Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cisse for a first team place.

The Czech star was asked whether he was disappointed about the failure to secure a move away from the club.

"There is no reason to be disappointed," he explained.

"Anything can still happen, I can still leave. This possibility is not eliminated.

"I did not want to hurry something and also that is why I remain at Liverpool.

"I have been here for three and half-a-years and I am satisfied.

"I still work for Liverpool and I want to do my best for them.

"Liverpool are going to play the league, two domestic cups and the Champions League. We are going to play approximately 70 matches and there are also the international duties.

"You can't play this amount of matches with the same two strikers.

"Every club has four high quality strikers, so there is no reason to be afraid.

"I will fight for the position and if it goes well, I will be happy. If not, we are going to resolve the situation with my agent."

He wants to fight for his place. Cue training ground bust-up then. :(

Interviewer: Rafa first of all, great news today that Steven Gerrard is staying with the club. What's your reaction?
Rafa: For sure we are delighted. We have always been talking about that we wanted that Steve stay with us all his life. Maybe it's bad news for me because in the future he'll be the new manager. Ok, it's good.

Interviewer: Did you feel he would be leaving?
Rafa: Nah, always when you talk with him you know or you knew that he was worried about the situation. At the end I think we have found a clear idea about the future and he wants to stay and we are delighted for sure.

Interviewer: How much of a boost has this given everybody at the club today?
Rafa: I think that it's really important for us because after these days we needed to recieve this good news. And then...we are now focused on the next games and thinking about the future with more positive things.

Interviewer: There's been a lot written in the newspapers suggesting your relationship with Steven isn't very good. What can you say about that?
Rafa: We have a very good relation for sure. And I didn't understand when I read the newspapers, and now we will see in the future. The relation is good and I want that...I think that we'll be better for sure, if it's possible. But it was difficult to have a better relation but it will be better if it is possible.

Interviewer: I imagine it's always important for a manager and a captain to have a particularly good relationship?
Rafa: Yah for sure. We have been talking during all the year and we need to keep in contact every day. For me as a manager it's important to know the mentality and the things the players are thinking about and Steve is the right person for these things.

Interviewer: You've said now for many weeks that you want to build a team around Steven, you can do that now?
Rafa: Yeah it's true. We are trying to do with the players we are signing. I think we will do a good team.

Interviewer: He has said, well he's told us, that maybe because of what's happened he's offered to you to give up the captaincy for the good of the club. What's your reaction to that?
Rafa: Yeah I understand why he's thinking about these things. And I have been talking with some players also about the situation. And we all have asked that he continue as captin. My idea for sure is he will be the captain, sure.

Interviewer: Presumably now you're just glad of the chance to not have to answer anymore questions about Steven Gerrard. And you can look to the future with Steven Gerrard on a long term Liverpool contract?
Rafa: I say that I wanted and I am sure that he will be with us for a long time. The most important thing now is to see the best of Steve during the games and I am exciting waiting the first game.

Interviewer: How much better can he become as a player do you feel?
Rafa: He will be focused in his club and in the games now. Because it was difficult for him every time talking about his new contract. And now I think he will be really really focused in his next games and it will be really good for us.

Figo for free would be good... if rumours that he'd half his wages are true... he'd provide great creativity to us and he can decide matches...

Skysports.com understands that Liverpool have succeeded in hijacking Everton's move for Valencia star Mohamed Sissoko.

The Mali international midfielder had seemed poised to join Everton after The Toffees had thrashed out a €7.4 million deal with their Spanish counterparts.

Sissoko was preparing to fly to Goodison Park to put the finishing touches to the deal, but, as had been predicted in some quarters, Liverpool have sneaked in and trumped their Merseyside rivals with a counter-offer.

Rafa Benitez is a confirmed admirer of the 20-year-old having signed him for Valencia two years' ago from Auxerre.

The Reds boss submitted an €8 million offer for the African and Sissoko has decided that a move to Anfield is more appealing.

His agent Jose Segui confirmed the news, telling skysports.com: "Valencia have taken the decision (to sell to Liverpool) and Momo is happier now."

Sissoko is expected to sign a four-year contract with Liverpool and is should arrive in England early next week for a medical

Made up if that's true. Rafa clearly rates the lad and couldnt stand the thought of the lad rotting away at Woodison.

Sissoko wants to reunite with Benítez

Mali international, Mohamed Sissoko, wants to pick his new team. The footballer does not feel attracted to the english club, Everton, although he knows that's where he would play the most minutes.

Sissoko, since learning that the directive was studying his exit, did not feel like leaving for another club, except for the team currently managed by Rafa Benítez, Liverpool. The player feels an attraction for the manager that made him known.

When Liverpool learned that Sissoko did not want to go to Everton, and that the "valencianista" club was planning his exit, they presented José Seguí their special interest for the midfielder. Until this past thursday when they put an offer over the table that surpasses eight million euros, according to CADENA SER.

So far the Football Director, Javier Subirats, and the president Juan Soler, are studying the offers, the president declared in CANALNOU "there are three offers that we are studying for the player". The development of his exit will continue via fax, since none of the representatives for any of the clubs will travel to Túria.

Jamie Carragher has spoken of his jubilation following Steven Gerrard's amazing u-turn earlier this week that saw the skipper pledge his long-term future to Liverpool Football Club. Like every Liverpool fan Carra admits he thought Gerrard's time with the Reds was over after the announcement on Tuesday that he would not be signing a new contract.

And he's revealed how the sensational turnaround in events on Wednesday morning has given everyone at the club a massive lift.

"We're all delighted he's staying like everyone else I was watching the reports on television and though he was leaving," Carragher told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Then we couldn't believe it when we were having breakfast at Melwood and news came through that he was staying. I almost spat my cornflakes out.

"It's a great boost for everyone at the club because we thought he had gone. It's almost like signing a new player for nothing, although I'm sure he'll cost a few quid in wages."

Carragher also confirmed that he was one of the senior players consulted by the manager over whether Gerrard should relinquish the captaincy in light of recent events.

He added: "The manager did speak to me and a few players and we all agreed that he is our captain and should stay as captain. He's just lifted the European Cup so he must be doing something right as captain.

"I have spoken to Steven over the last few days and I know what a difficult time it has been for him. It's just good that it's all finally over and now we can look forward to playing football again.

Masive boost this to our club, our best players just signed a new four year deal, Figo in the wings, Crouch rubbished by Parry on SSN, f*cked Bitters over Sissoko, still a few signings to come, and....Traore on a long term contract too.

Tenacious player with marvellous engine and passing qualities with more than an eye for goal. Can cover in defence as rightback and plays upfront for Mali. Best in the middle of the park though, even used by Valencia in the playmaker role at one stage. Could probably play in goal or even manage a team and handle the accounts and contracts with several players simultaneously while scouting for potential stars, jetsetting all over the world and closing deals with the rich and famous, devouring caviar and enjoying the occasional bubbly.
