Liverpool and Porto game at SkyDome confirmed for July 30

Canadian Press

May 18, 2004

TORONTO (CP) - Liverpool and Porto will come to SkyDome to play an exhibition soccer game the day before a scheduled friendly between Glasgow Celtic and AS Roma as part of this summer's ChampionsWorld Series.

The Canadian Soccer Association, which will sanction the July 30 and 31 matches, and ChampionsWorld officially confirmed the second match Monday. "We look forward to both the Celtic versus Roma match and at the same time, we are also delighted that a second match between European giants Liverpool FC of England versus FC Porto of Portugal has also been added to the weekend agenda," Kevan Pipe, chief operating officer of the CSA, said in a release.

The 11-game tour, which runs from July 24 to Aug. 3, also includes stops in Chicago, East Rutherford, N.J., East Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Porto, who won the Portuguese title this season and is in the Champions League final, will also play Turkish side Galatasaray at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford on Aug. 1. (damn, I wish I could be there :( )

Liverpool is also scheduled to play Celtic in East Hartford on July 26 and Roma on Aug. 3 in East Rutherford. The Premier League side, home to England star striker Michael Owen, finished fourth after an up-and-down season in England.

The Celtic-Roma game has done well at the box office in Toronto with some 25,000 tickets selling the first day they went on sale.

Organizers plan to cover SkyDome's artificial turf with a temporary natural grass pitch.

Workers will start installing the grass as soon as the Blue Jays and New York Yankees wrap up a three-game series on July 28.

The Jays are back home Aug. 2 so there is only a small window available at SkyDome.

The 2004 ChampionsWorld Series also includes European powerhouses Bayern Munich, Chelsea, AC Milan and Manchester United.

The 2003 ChampionsWorld Series drew 420,000 fans to eight games in seven U.S. cities. Teams that took part were Barcelona, Boca Juniors, Celtic, Club America, Juventus, Manchester United and AC Milan.
