If we beat Roma with with a few goals (could someone do the math, here?), and Barca will draw with Galata we will make it... It will be hard... very hard
Liverpool held on for a goalless draw in this Champions' League clash at the Nou Camp as Barca poured forward after the break. Philippe Christanval hit the post with a header, while Rivaldo and Javier Saviola saw shots flash just wide.
Liverpool proved in the opening half that they had no intention of repeating last season's spoiling tactics in the Nou Camp.
The Reds earned a 0-0 draw before taking a one-goal victory at Anfield in the Uefa Cup last term, but with their European future on the line, they were forced to attack.
Steven Gerrard missed a sitter at the far post on five minutes after moving in unmarked on to a John Arne Riise free-kick, while Barca threatened moments later when Frank de Boer's header from a corner just evaded Javier Saviola.
Gerrard nearly redeemed himself on nine minutes when his swept ball into the box allowed Emile Heskey to get in front of Philippe Christanval, but Roberto Bonano got down to save the England forward's low shot.
Gerrard was to the fore again on 23 minutes, rising highest at another set-piece - this one from Danny Murphy - but just failing to guide his header inside the post as Barca ball-watched.
The Catalans carved out their best chance of the first half on 35 minutes when Saviola escaped on the right of the Liverpool box and threaded a cross along the six-yard line, where Luis Enrique somehow let the ball slip off his toe and fly wide.
Saviola then got away on the other side of the area, only for Stephane Henchoz to deflect his goal-bound shot wide of the far post with goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek exposed.
Liverpool began the brighter after the break and Didi Hamann, booked earlier on to earn himself a suspension, threatened Bonano's goal with a 25-yard drive that whistled narrowly over.
Saviola and Heskey had penalty appeals turned down as the atmosphere hotted up in the Nou Camp.
Then Heskey broke away down the inside-left channel and bore down on Bonano, who took advantage of a slightly heavy touch from the forward to block his prodded shot.
The game was swinging from end to end and Rivaldo was next to show, thrashing in a 30-yard effort from out on the right which Dudek could only watch just clear the angle.
Liverpool escaped again on 68 minutes when Saviola's cross was flicked goalwards by Christanval.
His header bounced back off the far post and straight to Philip Cocu, who looked to have a simple tap-in, but the Dutchman got the ball stuck under his feet just a yard from goal and saw it whipped off his toe.
