Ligue 1 Thread

Senior Squad

There's a thread for PSG but as I hate them, I thought we could do with a L1 thread too. Maybe someone else cares too, although I doubt it :D

Most successful team - St. Etienne with 10 titles, however tha last time they manage to win it was in 80-81.

Montpellier won their first league title last year, infront of PSG and Lille.
Dissapointment for Lyon (4th), Marseille (10th) and Auxerre (now in Ligue 2).

Bastia, Reim and Troyes are all back in top flight. Monaco still in Ligue 2.

Top 2 teams qualify for the Champions League, third place team will start from the 3rd qualifying round. Fourth place team will get a place in the Europa League, two other EL slots are to filled via the Cup and League Cup

So far, after 6 rounds, Marseille lead the table winning all of their matches so far. Which is a surprise to everyone, after losing Azpi, M'Bia and Diarra. Number 1 striker Loic Remy has had a **** season so far and is currently out with an injury, Gignac has been amazing, though. Joey Barton is also finally able to play after his 12 match ban.

Lyon and P$G also up there, **** them. Stade de Reims is currently holding an awesome 5th place, and they beat Montpellier 3-1 few rounds ago. After buying some outcasts from Bordeaux and Lille this summer, no one really thought we'd be talking about Reims' come back to the big game.

Another kick-ass team so far is Lorient at 4th. They avoided selling all their best players this summer and with a help of Alain Traore who they signed from relegated Auxerre, Gourcuff has managed to make bread of out ****.

Montpellier are back at their old ways, being laughed at down at 17th.

Two OM vs. PSG matches next month. First Le Classique of the season will be played on 7th of october in the league, when PSG will go south to the Velodrome. Marseille will visit PSG in the League cup on the 31th.

My French team is RCL but I just realized their not even in the top division anymore :(

Can we have a French Ligue 2 thread?

lol, it's funny how many teams who were once fighting for top half finish in L1 are now in L2 - Guingamp, Lens, Monaco, Nantes...

Ha yeah I really loved Deschamps' Monaco.

I've always thought how great it would be to travel round France for a few weeks just watching a variety of football matches, very feasible too as France is right on my doorstep and tickets are easy to get, so many likeable clubs in France.

So today, Valenciennes invited Marseille over and threw a surprise bukkake party. 4-1 loss ended their 100% record.

Lyon plays Bordeaux later tonight, if they win they're just one point away from Marseille.

Marseille and PSG meet tomorrow at the Stade Velodrome. PSG lost to Porto in the CL while Marseille beat Cypriot champions AEL 5-1 in the Europa League, the awesomeness of Joey Barton made his debut at the Velodrome. 3rd and 4th place Lorient and Lyon also meet at Yves Allainmats' stadium.

Andre-Pierre Gignac and Michel Bastos are having their revivals. Both have been pretty poor last years and Bastos was close to leaving Lyon for either Fulham or Al-Ain. Sadly, right after scoring the goal of the season so far (video below) and getting up hopes to get called up for Brazil again, he got his back injured.

Alain Traore is the main reason why Lorient is where they are now.

Wissam Ben Yedder of Toulouse already scored 5 goals this season, only some Swedish dude from PSG has got more. Rumours are that Deschamps will give him a chance soon in friendlies.

Marseille 2-2 PSG

Gignac is a ******* legend, he's opener was brilliant. Marseille was a bit better side on the first half. Although Zlatan's both goals were class, I think Mandada couldv'e done better with both of them. Second half was pretty dull, Gameiro had a good chance to win it for PSG but did lulz instead. Marseille were happier with the result as after last weekend no-one thought they could stand a chance against PSG.

Lorient 1-1 Lyon

Lyon took the lead with an offside-goal. Aliadere equalized in the second-half. Lorient, Bordeaux and PSG are still unbeaten so far.

No changes in the TOP 4, but it got really tight as PSG at second is on 16 points and Toulouse at 7th on 13 points. Ben Yedder scored again as Toulouse drew with Valenciennes, making it 6 goals already. Stade de Reims beat Nancy and are now 5th, making it harder for Lorient to look like the surprise team of the season.

Awesome season so far.

PSG are now on top after beating the surprise team Reims 1-0 after playing like ****.

Marseille had a good game against last place Troyes but managed to **** up all their chances while Nivet scored the only chance Troyes got. Making things even worse, Gignac got injured and will be out for atleast two months with a fracture on his leg. Marseille are now pretty much hoping not to get raped every week and get some defending players in January as there are injury problems there too and half of the squad will **** off to Africa for the Cup of Nations soon.

Toulouse beat Evian 4-0 to continue their awesome start to the season.

1. PSG 19
2. Marseille 19
3. Lyon 18
4. Toulouse 16
5. Valenciennes 15

16. Montpellier 8

18. Sochaux 7

Latest trends in the Ligue:

In other news:
After calling L1 "a little boring", Joey Barton gave an interview, in english...with a french accent. He's been at Marseille since summer. He's a tool, but a legend. The ultras love him too.

What's been going on:
Everyone have been ****. I haven't updated this thread because Marseille has been extra-****, in both L1 and in Europa.

1. Lyon 31
2. OM 29
3. ASSE 26
4. PSG 26
5. Valenciennes 25
-
18. Sochaux 15
19. Troyes 8
20. Nancy 8

Top scorers be Zlatan **** with 13 goals already, Gomis with 10. Then Ben Yedder of Toulouse with 9 and Aubameyang (ASSE) with 8 goals. I'd be surprised if the last two guys won't move to a top club in January or in the coming summer. ASSE has been massive last few weeks and the gabonese dude has been amazing for them.

I remember he had some promise at Milan but got lost in favor of bigger names (Aubameyang that is)

It's winter break time now - next matches to be played in january 11-13.

The top 3:
1. PSG 38
2. Lyon 38
3. Marseille 38

Last christmas PSG were leading the table by 3 points, this year they're at top only thanks to the goal difference and have earned to points less compared to last year. Shit's different with L1 than it is with the EPL, the team that leads before the winter break, usually crashes and burns in the second half of the season. Zlatan blah blah...

Marseille has had a good first half, especially compared to last year (7 points more). Gignac has been lethal, sadly that's about it when it comes to their strike force. Remy is far from being on form and Ayew seems to be the only other player who knows how to score.

If I continue comparing this season and the last, then Nice have taken the biggest leap here. Eleven points more than last season and the usual relegation strugglers are now strong in the mid-table.

The most dissapointing teams have been Lille and the title-holders Montpellier, who are 8th and 11th. Bastia is doing well, theyre defence is one of the weakest in the league but thanks to Anthony Modeste, who has banged 9 goals already, they're not looking threatened by relegation. Also Landreau will be joining them in January after some drama in Lille.

Valenciennes, Lorient and Toulouse have also been doing well. Valenciennes has started playing really attractive football with a very even squad. Same goes for Lorient who look like they're contending for a place in Europa next year. Toulouse had a superb start but are now slowing down a bit, laying on 12th position, but it's hella-tight from there up to the 4th place.

Rennes, currently the 4th placed team, have been quite impressing recently. 23-years old Romain Alessandrini has been outstanding in the midfield and is expected to recive a call up for France's next friendlies.

Wow clash, that was an amazing write up. Do you follow Ligue 1 closely? Can you give a breakdown of like 20 players who you think will play outside of France in the next 5 years?

I mostly follow Marseille, I have a soft spot for them but I do try to watch other matches as much as I can, also the Ligue is kind enough to upload all the highlights to their own youtube channel etc.

As for players who'd probably make it outside, there's ofcourse the obvious ones in PSG and some who I can't see leaving cause of their loyality, such as Valbuena leaving Marseille.

Who I'd think will be picked up soon would be Aubameyang from ASSE, there were some rumours about him leaving to the EPL already.
Anthony Modeste from Nice, has scored 9 goals and is one of the main reasons why Nice is doing so well right now, algonside with Cvitanich, who is 28 but is now really gaining some form in Europe after flopping at Ajax.
Payet from Lille, a good winger, but is already 25. Might move in the summer, though.
Ben Yedder from Toulouse. Started the season by rivaling Zlatan for the top-scorers position. Everton is told to be interested in him.
Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier, their captain. Signed a new deal after long and hard negotiations but will most likely jump the ship in a year or two.
Remy could do better than Marseille but he's not getting any younger and his current form makes me doubt he'll leave this year.
Mevlut Erding who did well at PSG and is now playing for Rennes could do well in the mid-table sides in England or Germany.
Yann M'Vila, who is just 22 and has as many caps for France is your typical player who would ruin his carreer at Arsenal.
Alain Traore is also very good in my opinion, definately could do well in the highest level in a year or two.

Can't really write more from the top of my head, Lorient, Rennes, Brest and Valenciennes all have some good young talent at their side.

How many important players from last season did Montpelier lose?

Giroud. Other than that, they got rid of a youngster and two squad players. Now their 37-year old defender Cyril Jeunechamp got a year-long ban after punching a journalist, lol.

In other news, Marseille signed 29-year old Kadir from Valenciennes, which wasn't really what was expected to happen, but since he came for cheap...

Also, Moura finally debuted for PSG yesterday against some Qatari side. Didn't see the game, though.
