Lehmann picked to start for Germany at WC

So under pressure Klinsmann has chosen Lehmann to be his starting goalkeeper. I think Kahn's worst enemy were people at Bayern who yelling at Klinsmann to pick a starting keeper. Had he picked when he wanted to (in early May), Kahn might have had more time to redeem himself. Lehmann's form has been really great (shown vs. Juventus) and Kahn was poor against Cologne, being responsible for letting the goals in. Looking at the and being under pressure Klinsmann had to make his choice.

superlative form + very decent abilities vs. poor form + proven class

Klinsmann's gone for the former, and IMO its a gamble ...

I assume Kahn will pull himself out of the squad now (and maybe retire?), as his alternative is to sit and watch his most hated colleague take his place ...

that might be a loss if Lehmann's form dips at the wrong time ... but having said that, I assume once again that Timo Hildebrand will be second choice, and he's better than a good enough replacement to have ...
very decent abilities? you havent been watching arsenal this season have you

I disagree. Hildebrand is a good keeper, but his time won't be until after this World Cup.

I think its a good choice, Kahn hasn't seemed as reliable in the past 2 seasons (Anyone remember that howler he let in against Carlos in last seasons CL quarter?)

Lehmann has been immense this season, I'll be interested too see how hes going to handle the pressure when it really matters. It'd also be hilarious to see him right hook someone in a WC semi or something (H)

That Nice Guy
dont suppose someone could give me a list of Klinsmann's problems as coach could they?

The Legend
Fully deserved, Jens has been in special form.

You could argue he's been the world's premier keeper this year. He's had a young defense in front of him, hell, a young team, but he still makes big time stops.

Ive got bad feelings about this.... Sure I'm happy that my club's no.1 is gunna represent his country, but Its not like the NT players see Lehmanns face every week during the Bundesliga. (:/)

Most keepers are in that situation. van der Sar, Coupet, Isaksson, Lehmann, Dida, Cech etc. Don't think it'll be much of a problem, but of course the optimal would be to play with the same defenders in both club and country.

Team Captain
It was the right move but I think it was unfair towards Kahn.

Lehmann was Klinsmann's first choice from the day he took over the job. First he made Ballack captain, then he sacked the goalie coach and declared the race to be open. Now, after Kahn made some blunders, it was the right time to go ahead and pick Lehmann.

This whole soap opera distracted us from the real problems, the four guys in front of him.

Nope, he's far too inexperienced and he needs to prove himself on a higher level. I rate Hannover's Enke higher than him, he's been the best gk in the Bundesliga the past two seasons.

Nice to have a German opinion on this, as most of us others probably haven't seen nearly enough to be qualified to say this or that about German goalkeepers. The only one I have seen much of is Lehmann and he's been amazing lately.

I always thought Robert Enke was a great keeper.
When he came to Benfica from M'gladbach, I thought he was gonna be huge in the future, as he was so young and so skilled at the time.
His good form at Benfica took him to Barcelona, where he did, in fact, f'ck up too many times.
So after he left Barça I hadn't heard from him since, good to know the man's doing well in Germany.

I never liked Kahn much to be honest, and Lehmann just has that goofy look which takes some credit off of him :fool:

So yeah, I guess that if Enke keeps that good form in the future, he's got a strong chance of becoming Germany's number one keeper even if he isn't a youngster anymore.

So because you never liked Kahn and you think Lehmann looks goofy, Enke might have a good chance of becoming Germany's number one keeper...?
